You’ve heard of the five-second rule.
The joke is, if you drop food on the ground you have five seconds to pick it up before it becomes germy. A germ expert at Aston University in Birmingham, England, says the five-second rule is pretty much right.
Professor Anthony Hilton claims there is little to be concerned about if the food is only on the ground or floor momentarily. However, he adds: “Eating food that has spent a few moments on the floor can never be entirely risk-free.”
