  • No, it's not the most wonderful time of the year (yet!) but it is one of the most exciting— Hallmark's full schedule for its 2018 'Countdown to Christmas!' has been revealed! And the best part? The network, and its sister channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, are airing a record 36 brand-new movies this holiday season. Not only does that mean more films to watch, but it also means we get to start viewing them even earlier this year. Hallmark will kick off its annual event with Christmas at Pemberley Manor on Saturday, October 27. Who will be watching?
  • Today in 1897: The “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” letter was published in the New York Sun.
  • Parents, do you know what makes your kids happy? It’s… YOU. That’s according to a survey (by Associated Press). Researchers asked more than 1,000 teens what gave them the most satisfaction, and guess what? The #1 Answer: Spending time with family. Hanging out with friends was #2. The big surprise? Money and material possessions ranked near the bottom of every teen’s list.
  • Hey Ladies… If your hubby has been letting himself go a bit lately, here’s why — men give up trying to be trendy and cool at the age of 46.  Most say they’re not in great shape anymore and have stopped worrying about how they look, and a third of guys could care less about the health implications of what they eat. What’s behind this laziness? You may be able to blame marriage. Two thirds of guys say it’s normal to give up worrying about your appearance once you get hitched.  … Women also give up caring — but not until age 59.

Seattle novelty company Archie McPhee is selling mac and cheese candy canes this year.
Would you TRY them?

In The News:
  • A horde of one of the country’s deadliest spiders has moved into a Georgia woman’s new home — and she’s prepared to take extreme measures to get rid of them. Nicole Photianos jokes, “We should burn it down.” About 30 brown recluse spiders invaded the house shortly after the Photianos family moved in. At least all other insects are gone.
  • A survey of employees finds bosses have no idea what their staff do on a daily basis. One in three believe their managers are totally oblivious about the jobs they do on a daily basis.
  • Is your dog sad? That may mean that you’re probably on your mobile device too much. Some studies have shown that human relationships aren’t the only ones that suffer when you spend too much time on your phone. Experts say our growing attachment to technology could have negative effects on our pets, too. Dogs especially may feel sad when their owners focus most of their attention toward a screen, and may even develop behavioral issues as a result.
  • We all love singing along while driving. But we should be cautious while driving! An Oregon man told police he crashed his car after a bee flew into his mouth while he was singing along with a song on the radio.

  • In California a man went into a bank, pulled the hood of his sweatshirt over his face, and told the teller to hand over some money. He ran out with about a thousand dollars. Then the thief went back to that same bank several hours later to deposit about 10% of the stolen money into the ATM — into his own bank account. A bank employee recognized him and called police.
  • A German triathlete has been banned from an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant after he wolfed too much food. Jaroslav Bobrowski, an Ironman competitor, went to the sushi place (Running Sushi in Landshut, Bavaria) last weekend and paid his $19 for as much as he could eat. The former bodybuilder managed to put away almost 100 servings — the amount normally eaten by five people. Each plate had two or three pieces of sushi on it. The triathlete, who works as a software engineer, follows an extreme diet where he does not eat for 20 hours and then eats until he is full. The restaurant owner told him personally he was no longer allowed to eat there.

  • Next time someone calls you bird-brained, take it as a compliment. Research shows that birds can remember not only where they left an object, but when it was left. Birds have a memory function that works along the same lines as humans remembering where they left the car keys. Birds use their memory to hide food and dig it back up before it rots.
  • Ever wanted to get a text from the President? The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to test a system allowing the president to send a message directly to cellphones of U.S. residents. FEMA will conduct the first nationwide test of Presidential Alerts on Thursday  beginning at 2:18 PM ET, followed by an EAS portion coming at 2:20 PM ET.
