In The News:
- On May 1st, May Day ushers in a traditional celebration of flowers and spring. In many ancient calendars, May 1st welcomed the first day of summer. This was truly a cause for celebration.
- Gifts for mom. A survey found that nearly half of respondents — 48 percent — are willing to splurge on a gift for Mom versus 38 percent on a gift for Dad. A survey found we’re more willing to splurge on mom for Mother’s Day than dad for Father’s Day.
- Chick-Fil-A meal kit. Chick-Fil-A is launching its first ever nationwide meal kit. The chicken chain's first kit is a chicken parmesan meal kit, complete with breaded-style chicken, garlic lemon pasta, marinara sauce and Italian-style cheeses. The kit, available in grocery stores nationwide May 4th, will feed two and costs around $15.
- Sleeping 10 hours a day. Want to live to 100? Well a study suggests you get 10 hours of sleep a night. In the study, researchers found that people who reach 100 are three times more likely to spend at least 10 hours a night in bed. The study involved analysis of data from a 2005 Chinese survey.
- National Mother Goose Day on May 1st each year honors Mother Goose and the imaginary author of a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes we loved as children. Mother Goose is often illustrated as an elderly countrywoman in a tall hat and shawl, but she is also sometimes depicted as a goose wearing a bonnet.
- Mother’s day shopping at the hardware store:
} Eighty-five percent of women surveyed have been or expect to be solely responsible for a home at some point in their lives.
} Fifty-three percent surveyed say they are responsible for basic household maintenance and repair either on their own or in conjunction with their spouse.
} Seventy-five percent of women say they do more home projects themselves than they did five years ago.
} Eighty percent say they are more confident in their home-improvement abilities than they were five years ago.
- Teachers should be paid more. According to a survey, 80 percent of parents are in agreement that teachers should be paid more after having to homeschool their kids. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic parents have had to take on the role of teachers as schools across the country have been shut down, and now they see just how hard it is to be a teacher. More results of the study show that four in five parents now have a newfound respect for the teaching profession. Half of the parents in the study also work from home now and feel that balancing a career and being a substitute teacher is "overwhelming."

- Swedish Manure idea. Governments around the world have used laws, fines and advertising campaigns to encourage social distancing. The Swedish city of Lund took a unique approach to the problem. Lund Council has ordered workers to dump a ton (literally) of chicken manure across its main city park to deter crowds from gathering yesterday (Thursday) during an annual celebration… On a national level Sweden has banned all gatherings of more than 50 people, and city officials in Lund wanted to do whatever was necessary to keep people away from the main park yesterday.
- NASCAR resuming races. NASCAR is set to return to action next month - and will make up for lost times with a marathon schedule. Officials announced Thursday that racing would resume May 17th at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, kicking off a run of seven races in 11 days at Darlington and Charlotte. NASCAR hopes to complete a full slate of 36 Cup Series races with a 10-race postseason. No dates have been announced past May 27th.
