In The News:
- Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “fifth of May.” • Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. In fact, the Cry of Dolores is the real Mexican Independence Day that’s celebrated on September 16. • May 5th or “Cinco de Mayo” celebrates the day that Mexicans defeated Napoleon's army in the Franco-Mexican War in 1862. However, the war still lasted from 1861 to 1867. Mexican Americans use this exact date to celebrate their culture in the United States. Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated over in the mainland of Mexico. Over the years, it’s become a day where every American celebrates it, regardless if they’re Mexican or not.
- Don’t bury cash. Five years ago, a farmer in China buried the equivalent of $280,000 on his property. Unfortunately when he recently dug up the cash, the bills were completely falling apart. Apparently, employees at the Agricultural Bank of China did the best they could to separate the mess of deteriorated paper bundles but he still lost about 25 percent of his savings.
- Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly been working with writers on a biography. The book is called Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family — and it’s set to be released on August 11… The description promises that the book will go “beyond the headlines to reveal unknown details of Harry and Meghan’s life together.” Harry and Meghan gave an interview to the book’s authors before moving from the U.K. to Canada (and now Los Angeles). However, representatives of the Sussexes are denying they spoke with the authors or sat for any interviews.
- National Foster Care Day. Dedicated to all the children in the U.S. foster care system, National Foster Care Day on the first Tuesday in May encourages everyone to wear blue and raise their voices to show their support for foster youth everywhere. Kicking off Foster Care Month, National Foster Care Day provides a platform to help repair a system that is plagued with shortages nationwide. With over 400,000 children in the foster care system at any given time, and a new child placed into care every 2 minutes, the need for support services, essential items, and foster parents is high.
- Hole in the facemask. Insert facepalm. A Kentucky woman was captured on video shopping with a hole cut in her face mask, claiming that it made it “easier to breathe.” A gas station clerk is heard asking the woman entering his convenience store why she has a hole in her mask. She tells him, “Well, since we have to wear them and it makes it hard to breathe, this makes it a lot easier to breathe.”
- Netflix streaming average. Some new info reveals Netflix subscribers in the United States have been averaging 3+ hours of streaming per day. For comparison, Netflix users watched an average of two hours of content per day in 2019.
- National Cartoonists day. Observed on May 5th each year, National Cartoonists day honors all those creative ink-stained artists, past and present, and the fascinating pieces they have created. Throughout the years, their talents bring humor, entertainment into our lives while provoking thought and debate, too.
- 5 year-old driver. A member of the Utah Highway Patrol stopped what he thought was an impaired driver. Turns out it was a 5-year-old who somehow made his way onto the freeway in his parents’ car. A Lamborghini…..
- A runway, not a driveway. In Norway an 80-year-old driver was on his way home when he got a little confused. He took a wrong turn and drove through a locked gate, past an airplane hangar and right onto the runway of the local airport.
- National Astronaut Day on May 5th each year celebrates Astronauts as true heroes. The day’s mission is to inspire ALL to “reach for the stars” by sharing “out of this world” Astronaut stories and experiences. On May 5th, 1961, Astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. became the first American in space aboard the Freedom 7 Space capsule. The brief suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a milestone achievement.
- Clean the beard. Hipsters take note: Your much-loved facial hair may contain more feces than a toilet. And the research (Aston University) has confirmed beards can spread bacteria. The study looked at whether surgical masks caught bacteria falling from surgeons faces, and whether having a beard affected how many bacteria fell. What they found was that men with beards do harbor a significant number of bacteria, more than non-bearded men and women… However, while there is evidence beards are filled with bacteria, there is no proof this leads to health problems. After all, it’s not uncommon to find 20,000 bacteria on the skin, and this isn’t harmful… And other experts argue that beards are no less hygienic than a clean-shaven face.
Fun Fact:
Each year, the average American eats 22 pounds of lettuce. (were kids included in this calculation?) #funfact
