My Family (Day 1 - A Week of Thanksgiving)

- - -
Instead of making it a month feature, I’ve decided to make the posts for the following days part of my “Week of Thanksgiving”.
- - -

Today, I’m thankful to God for my family. Lydia, Mysia and Malachi. Without them, life would be very, very boring. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.

For those who know us, I couldn’t live without my companion and best friend, Lydia. For over 10 years, she has chosen to live with me. She puts up with my constant attempt at humor and all my faults. She encourages me and stand behind me in my endeavors. We talk about everything, and I could not ask for a better wife!

Mysia is the sweetest daughter a guy could have. Smart, witty, and creative! And yes, she can put up with me pretty good too. In fact, she can out think me on jokes from time to time. She loves to learn and enjoys finding time lose herself in a book. She’s a joy to hang out with!

Of course, I can’t forget about my very energetic, active son Malachi. A mixture of Curious George and Hammy (from Over The Hedge), he keeps me on my toes. Very observant, he likes posing questions and always wants to find something to do. He’s makes interaction fun!

Family activities are always enjoyable and an adventure, even when they don’t go as planned. I’m thankful to have these three a part of my life!!!

Matt's Cheeseburger Pie (Recipe)

There are several dinners that Lydia allows me to make in the kitchen from time to time. This is one that is a favorite... my cheeseburger pie. There is never any leftovers, so I now have to make two! Yum.

• Lawry's seasoned salt
• Onion Powder (3 tsp)
• 2 Cheddar Cheese blocks (8 oz)
• Pickles (chopped)
• Mustard
• Ketchup
• 2 Eggs
• Mayo (½ cup)
• Heavy Cream (½ cup)
• Black pepper

Directions:

1. Brown 2 pounds beef, sprinkled with Lawry's seasoned salt. (Drain fat)

2. Add 3 teaspoons onion powder.

3. Place beef mixture in casserole/pie dish and stir in 8 ounce grated cheese (block).

4. In mixing bowl, mix chopped pickles, chopped tomatoes, mustard, and ketchup. Add this layer of ingredients over beef and cheese combination.

Peeing in the Shower

I constantly combat athletes foot. Something I’ve dealt with since my teenage years. Yuck. Unfortunately, it is a fact of life for me. I take medications and I try to keep it under control.

Just recently though, I heard that “peeing in the shower” can help cure the fungus. Really? Doing some research, I’ve found that since urine is sterile and nontoxic, it can help get rid of it. It’s a debatable topic. Some say that the only reason it works is because you really clean your feet afterwards, and the cleaning is the real cure. Hmmmm….

Sure enough, it’s part of “urine therapy”! I didn’t even realize such a thing existed. But I’m not really surprised.

I’m not sure if I’m up to peeing on my feet every time I take a shower. But after reading that toilet flushing accounts for almost 27 percent of indoor water use in a home… It might help with the monthly water bill!

INTERNET: Who's Watching You?

The other day, I did a search for USB hubs on Google. I was looking to see what is available for charging several devices at once. I came across some neat products, and even "pinned" them. (yes, I use Pinterest)

To my surprise, while reading my "news feed" on Facebook, I noticed an ad for one of the hubs I had shown interest in. Wow... talk about feeling a bit creepy. How did Facebook know? I didn't do the search through Facebook, I did it through Google. Oh, and isn't that info private?

Doing some research (of course), it appears that Facebook has the tools to be able to read the cookies on your browser, allowing them to see the products that you check out online. A tool that also allows companies to see who visits their sites as well. Pretty neat on some aspects, but also something that I'm not to happy about. Especially knowing that they could harvest info and link it to your profile.

Hey Siri...

I’ve updated my iPhone to the new iOS 8 and have been enjoying some to the new features. One of them is being able to ask Siri questions when the phone is charging. I’ll be sitting at my office desk and I get the urge to have her do simple tasks. Something to keep me entertained during the work day I guess. Hey, it's the little things! :)

For example, the conversation with my phone the other day....

Me: "Hey Siri... what time is it?"
Siri: "At the tone, the time will be 3:41 PM."
Siri: (still in her voice): "Beep"

Yes, I like a phone with my sense of humor!!! LOL

Share A COKE with Paasch

If you hadn't seen, COKE started with a campaign to have personal names on their bottles. They even put together a website that allows you to try your name. http://ShareaCoke.com

Unfortunately, if you have an odd name, like my daughter, it's not in their database. Neither is our last name. Well, that's not fun.

Say "Yay" to my insane graphic design skills! I can do this... so I downloaded the image, erased the name, and found the illusive font that COKE uses for it's logo (you2013.ttf). It works!

I'm a hero!

Logo Design: Dove Brothers Band

Recently I was commissioned to redesign the logo for the Dove Brothers Band. They had created several years ago, but did not have access to the high quality file. They needed something that they could use for print.

I offered my services, and they accepted. I then spent several nights finding similar fonts and recreating the elements. The logo is now entirely vector, allowing them to be able to take it to any printer for whatever their need is. Plus, I think it looks a lot sharper… but that’s my personal opinion.

KWFC Fan Day at the Southern Gospel Picnic

Last Friday the staff of KWFC had the privilege to be at Silver Dollar City to hand out our popular fan for those attending the first day of the Southern Gospel Picnic festival. Although it was hot, there was a pretty good turn-out. We stood at the entrance, greeting visitors as they walked in toward the square. They went pretty fast.

I met friends and listeners of the station. We also had the chance to take in one of the performances of the Mark Trammell Quartet!

The fan was one of the projects I had been working on over the past month. I have a template I’ve worked with over the past several years, but it is necessary to make sure that the schedule is correct and free from any mistakes. Yes, another thing to add to my portfolio!

I took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

A friend of mine, Patrick, nominated me to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. (Click to view) So, in my backyard, I filled up a bucket with cold water and added shaved ice... brrrr! Just like all who has done this already, I plan to make a donation this weekend.

There has been a few on social media that have started questioning the idea of supporting ALS. They claim that it would be morally wrong as a Christian to donate to a foundation that has financed Embryonic Stem Cell Research. They make note that the research is done with aborted babies. Hmm... would I want to take part in this?

As many of my friends and family know, I don't just want to go with what I read on facebook. And with that in mind, I decided to do my own research as well.

Based on reporting from the American Life League, a spokeswoman from ALSA wrote the following:

The ALS Association primarily funds adult stem cell research.  Currently, The Association is funding one study using embryonic stem cells (ESC), and the stem cell line was established many years ago under ethical guidelines set by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS); this research is funded by one specific donor, who is committed to this area of research.  In fact, donors may stipulate that their funds not be invested in this study or any stem cell project. Under very strict guidelines, The Association may fund embryonic stem cell research in the future.

After do more reading, I found this: "Embryonic stem cell lines do not come from aborted fetuses."

Cells with the potential to form embryonic stem cells in a lab dish only exist in these four to five day old blastocysts. They are a fleeting cell type that disappears after that point in time. A common misconception is that the cells can come from aborted fetuses, which is in fact not possible.

All the human embryonic stem cell lines currently in use come from four to five day old embryos left over from in vitro fertilization (IVF). In in vitro fertilization, researchers mix a man's sperm and a woman's eggs together in a lab dish. Some of those eggs become fertilized and begin developing. At about five days the egg has divided to become a hollow ball of roughly 100 cells called a blastocyst which is smaller than the size of the dot over an “i”. It is these very early embryos that are implanted into the woman in the hopes that she becomes pregnant.

By the way, when I make make my donation, I'll include instructions not to use it for Embryonic Stem Cell Research, and designate it to something specific. Now that's not too hard!

“Prayer Discount”

Earlier this month, the news of a restaurant in Winston-Salem, NC offering Prayer Discount went viral. You get a 15% off your check if you said grace before your meal. Many were in support of their practice. However, there was just as many in disagreement, calling it discrimination.

Sadly, Mary’s Gourmet Diner has now discontinued the four year policy, claiming they have been threatened by a lawsuit. Apparently, the atheists at the Freedom From Religion Foundation got offended. They claim that is illegal to “charge an atheist more than a Christian."

Many restaurants and chains give discounts to seniors, military, students, single mothers, and even those with well-behaved children. Can a drop-out sue a business for not getting a student discount?

Hmmmm…

Dreaming of Paradise

Over the past week I’ve been in thinking about the cruise to the Bahamas that Lydia and I took back in January. It was soooooo much fun. My first time on the beach and to see the ocean, the fun we had swimming out to sea, taking naps while basking in the warmth of sun in the middle of winter…

We had such a wonderful time aboard the ship. To me it was an definitely an adventure. We didn’t know what to expect, and there was always something new happening. The food was fantastic and the pools were relaxing. With entertaining shows and performances, and things to do, it was nice to get away from life. Lydia enjoyed not having to worry about school and I didn't have to worry about work projects. We put most worries aside.

It was also nice to get away from parental responsibilities. The ability to not have to keep track of the kids was great. However, we missed our kids by the end of our trip. We found ourselves talking about them more and more, and wishing they could take in some of the experiences we had. We made sure to get pictures, videos, and some gifts (of course). When we arrived home, we found they had a wonderful time without us, and can’t wait until next year.

Oh… and yes… we are going again. And we are looking forward to it!!!

Anyway, dreaming about our wonderful vacation brings several thoughts to my mind. We got to visit some awesome places, and we hear and read of other lands that are more magnificent in beauty and relaxation. There is so many places we can visit.

If that’s just a small taste of paradise, what is awaiting us in heaven? Oh boy! That’s a thought.

National Day Of The Year

Like I've mentioned before, I love odd "facts". I enjoy doing research when I get time.

Back in 2013, I started a "picture challenge" on Facebook. I took the days of the year, and would find a theme for each day to take a picture and post it. It was a bit challenging on occasion, but fun.

Since I host the afternoon on KWFC Radio (except Saturdays), and I'm using my research to announce the "Nation Day of The Year" during the 1 o'clock hour. It's been fun and sometimes unusual. You never know what I might do.

A few weeks ago it was National Chocolate Pudding Day. So the hour started with Bill Cosby introducing his favorite snack. On Donald Duck Day, listeners were greeted with his unmistakable rant. Garfield the cat told some wise wisdom about his counterpart Odie before the first song on his day as well.

I also had the most fun on National Repeat Day! I repeated myself throughout the entire hour and each song was repeated by a different artist. (We received encouraging calls and emails with that show).

If interested on what might happen, just tune in!

Oh, the Internet.

Can I live without the internet? Hmmmm... sure would be hard.

Now before you think I’m crazy (I know... too late...), but hear me out. I probably depend on the internet too much. I’m constantly connected and I use it for everything. Thanks to the internet on my iPhone, I’m able to be online 24/7. It can be good of course (the whole point of this post), and it can be bad (which I’ll avoid discussing for now, lol).

In the past, Lydia and I have talked about ditching the internet in the past. One, it would save some money. Two, we wondered if it was really necessary. Well, with all things considered, we’ve kept the internet. Now there’s no turning back.

Having the internet sure makes it easy to keep up with family and friends. In fact, that’s what what our family blog is for... to keep our family updated with what’s going on. Facebook is great on helping us keep updated with others’ lives too.

I’ve done some figuring, and without the Internet, our lives would be very difficult. One case in point was Lydia attending college. With all classes, the internet was a necessity. Her professors use it to post assignments and Lydia would often have to to upload her homework. Not to mention that many of the quizzes were done online as well.

For me, I use it for research and file uploads for my graphic design projects. Of course, it’s also used in communication in those situations as well. It helps with extra income from time to time.

Like many things in our lives, it’s a tool. How we use it... is up to us.

Trusting Authority

How well do we trust authority? Are we allowed to question it?

In my mind… yes. In fact, I encourage it. As a nation, if we didn’t, we wouldn’t be free or have the freedoms we love so much. Our government is set up as “we the people”. It was structured to adjust and be governed by our beliefs. That’s why we vote for laws and governing officials. How well do you trust our government, do you not question everything that is going on, or blindly trust all that they do?

In the Bible, the early Christians questioned what was being taught. Acts 17:11 They were eager to learn and make sure the facts were correct.

I’m the same way. I will question authority and try to find what I hear is true or not. Some may think that I’m unstable, seeking to see if my beliefs are real. No, I’m just making sure the foundations of my beliefs are actually grounded in truth and not tradition or opinion. I want a firm foundation. Putting a false hedge around a fake belief is not going to let it stand for very long.

Authority can gain trust. But true authority will encourage those following to search and try what they hear. (1 Thessalonians 5:21, Revelation 2:2, 1 John 4:1)

Seeking Truth

I’ve posting about my opinions and how I like truth. Facts and having the correct information is something that I hold dear.

To be frank, if I say or post something that questions a foundation of your belief, instead of criticizing me, please do your research. Don’t base it of tradition or one source.

When doing my research, I try my best to seek out more than just one “opinion”. For example, if I’m planning a trip, besides just trusting what a hotel’s self rating is, I’ll look for others' opinions on their visit. If I can, I’ll even go so far to see if I can contact someone to see how their stay was. If I was to attend a big event like the National Quartet Convention, I’d do more than just trust what the promoter has to offer. I want to know from someone who has experienced the stay. I’ll look for recommendations, comments, and stories…. both good and bad.

I’m often confused why so many will take one person’s word as fact without looking to see if what they say is true or not. They simply believe and base so much on that one person. Just because someone has been placed in authority, or has great ideas, do your research! Please… You’ll learn so much if you do a little questioning. It’s okay!

If no one questioned things, we wouldn’t have the things we live by today. Think electricity. Or something basic of the rubber (do a study on Charles Goodyear). If it wasn’t for the search for better trade routes, there wouldn’t have been a “discovery” of the Americas.

Do you seek truth?

Sharing Truth

As I posted yesterday, I love research in “facts”. However, I find it hard to share what I’ve learned. Although some are grateful when I point out truths, some see it as an attack. If I show that what they present as fact is actually wrong, they are quick to accuse me of denouncing their beliefs.

Yikes.

Simply put, that’s not so. I’m just simply pointing out that they should do their own research and not base their beliefs off of one source. Just like when I present something, I encourage those reading or listening to then see if what I said is true. And if they find out I’m wrong, let me know.

Now, I’m not saying I’m always right. However, I am very careful not to say anything that could be wrong. I’ve very protective of what I say or write. I try my very best to relay things that are true, because I want to gain trust.

My Musings

There is a reason for the name of my blog...

I love facts. Anyone that spends time with me is familiar with how much “useless stuff” I know. I probably spend too much time researching things that don’t really amount to much. It’s almost became a “hobby” of mine, though not really specific.

Yes, I’ve been told that I have an analytical mind when it comes to my research and a thirst for “knowledge”, whether its useful or not. I’m very inquisitive and do enjoy studying strange facts. I don’t always take things at face value… I like to seek out the answer to “why”.

Often, it leads me learning awesome things and causes me to question our perception of things. I do this with almost everything, from what I read on the internet, the news, what friends and family tell me, and even what I hear from the pulpit. When someone makes a statement, I analyze the thought wondering if it is based on truth and fact, or just tradition and rumor. Unfortunately, I have found that it’s sometime best to keep my observation to myself, otherwise I may come across as attacking their ‘beliefs’ or that I’m better than them in correction.

It’s not my intent to be harsh. I often think that one would like to know that they are spreading falsehood or twisted facts. But that’s not the case. Therefore, I have this blog - My outlet to post my opinion. My musings. I guess I just need to be more brave with what I write...? :P

Over the next few days, I'll be posting my thoughts on "Truth".

Remember, this is MY opinion.

Having An Impact: Compassionate to Others

Being compassionate to others is not easy for anybody. Especially toward those who don’t agree or see “eye-to-eye” with you. It’s also difficult when you feel they don’t deserve the compassion.

Of course, perhaps I should define “Compassion”. I see it as having love and passion for the well-being of another. Having a tender heart. It's something that I've posted before. I'm not a fan of what is considered "tough love". Yes, I believe in doing things right. But that doesn't mean it should be done in a self-righteous, pious behavior. That won't win affection or real respect from others. I don't want to be self-centered.

Yes, I want to have a true compassion toward others. That's how to have a true impact! (John 13:34-35)

Having An Impact: Be Faithful in Commitments

Okay, as the other things I’ve been addressing in this “series”, this one may be the most difficult. “Commitments” can include a wide range of promises, from short to long-term. Some are easy and then those that are hard. Of course, it falls in line with "helping others".

We all make commitments. I commit to making sure that that I do my daily duties. I also commit to my responsibilities. I’ve committed my life to loving and faithful my wife, and also taking care of my kids. I commit to doing my job at the workplace.

There are other things too. I often commit to duties and projects to others. I just have to be sure to follow through. That’s the hard part. My mind often forgets, and I’m also a professional procrastinator. I’m constantly trying to better myself in this area.

I’m often a “yes man” when it comes to others asking me to do favors. I admit that I’m often a people-pleaser, and enjoy helping others. However, I’ve also learned that there are times that I have to politely say ‘No”. This way, I can be more thoughtful and faithful in those commitments I make.

Yes, I have committed to be better at honoring my commitments!

Having An Impact: Communicate Honestly

I have a little pet peeve when I hear someone relay a thought or answer a question by starting it with “Honestly..”
I often want to reply with: “Really? Does that mean everything else said wasn’t honest? I can only believe the following statement, and not any of the other things you said?”

And yes, I’ve done that a few times.

To me, being honest in communication should be a given. Why lie? I was raised to be honest is my statements and answers. If my parents asked me a question, it better have been answered in honesty and truth. I believe no one likes being lied to, or treated with dishonesty.

However, I had hard time with this growing up. I was very trusting in my friends. Sadly, many used that against me, and I was considered “gullible”. And I guess I was. Yes, I believed I should trust my friends. I was honest to them, shouldn’t I receive the same in return. Unfortunately, several took advantage of my “trusting” and would have fun at my expense.

This may be hard to believe, but I’ve grown up. Yes, I still long to trust others, but found I can’t always do that. On the other hand, that’s not going hinder me in being honest. I still believe in honest communication and will still strive to be honest to others.

In fact, honest communication is the staple in my marriage and relationship with Lydia. It’s been that way since we first started dating. We communicate about everything. That communication is all based on honesty.

I do want to clarify that there’s a difference between being honest and being "frank in conversation". With others, there are topics and situations in conversation that I don’t need to give all information. What I do speak of will be in honesty, but I will hold back on speaking too much if it is unnecessary. I believe that gossip is not ‘honest communication”. I can be honest without telling everything that needs not to be shared. :)

Communicating honestly is a great policy, a great way to have an impact on those around you. Something I strive to have.

Having An Impact: Show Example by Making Right Decisions

There is a motto I try to hold to: “Always Do Right.”

It’s not easy. I can’t say that it’s something that is easily chosen either. I’ve often had to step back and look at the situation to make sure I’m making the right decision. I try my best to look at all sides and consider the situation. Not rushing into a decision in I can.

At times, I have been ridiculed and mocked for picking the right decisions too. That’s hard. Especially when there is peer pressure. Of course, when having to go against the crowd, I’m not saying it’s something to shove it in their face either. I honestly don’t want to think myself as better than someone else.

As a teenager, I know I was labeled as a “goody-two-shoes”. Yes, I didn’t do much that would be considered as rebellious, and I tended to not cause trouble. However, I did have my moments. Hey…. I’m not perfect!

For the most part, I’m not always concerned on how others see me when making decisions. I try to do what’s right, and also make sure I’m doing what God would have me to do. My wife and kids are my foremost concern and priority. I figure that my greatest impact will be to my kids.

Yup, it’s my decision to live this way.

Having An Impact: Be Helpful To Others

This topic is very much like my last post, but it is going on beyond being an encouragement. It’s actually doing something. Helping others.

Is this something I can do? Well, I can honestly say “yes”. I can help with many things. The key is to help in areas that I’m good at, otherwise, it’s wise to not attempt. For example, based on experience, if a friend needs help with a bathroom remodel, I won’t be much of a help.

One of my favorite things to do is research. I love helping other find facts about things, debunking myths, and finding out information on places or products. Of course, finding out if certain news sites are true and reliable is a challenge. This is something that friends have me do on occasion.

If I can truly help in other areas, I will.

Having An Impact: Be An Encouragement To Others

How easy is for me to be an encouragement? You would think that this is an easy goal for me, right? I honestly try not to bring others down. And if you’re around me often, you know that I’m pretty light-hearted. However, there are times that I can be too annoying, and even offend others. Whoops...

Needless to say, I’m trying. I think that I encourage others, but sometimes I look back and wonder if I really did. I then try and remind myself to be more mindful during those conversations.

It’s also my goal to be an encouragement online as well. For example, many of my posts through social network sites are aimed at bringing a smile or comforting thought to those who read them. Yes, there are a few posts that are serious too.

Hopefully, I can strive to be a true encouragement to others.

Having An Impact: Show A Positive Attitude

As I posted last time, there are a few things that I’m going to try to do to have an impact on those around me.

On the top of my list is “showing a positive attitude”. Of course, most who know me realize that it’s something I already strive to have. I try not to be gloomy... But I do have my days or those certain occasions (just ask Lydia or my kids).

Showing a positive attitude goes beyond being happy all day. It also means that I need to be content and positive when doing my work, or a task. That’s not always easy. When there’s a table to be cleaned off, a mess to be cleaned up, or even putting my things away… a positive attitude is needed.

My stumbling on the attitude is when things aren’t working out my way. I tend to get frustrated, and boy, does it often show! I clam up or try to hide my emotions. That’s definitely not positive. Then, there’s those times where I get agitated enough to vocalize my thoughts - not good.

I hope that I can work on this even more, and show a positive attitude more often.

Having An Impact...

“How can I be a difference in this world?”
Isn’t that an interesting thought? During one if his messages, my pastor once made the point that we all have an impact on the people around us. Sometimes that impact can be good or bad. Yes, how we act can affect those around us.

As I sat in church, I began to think of several things in my life I need to make sure I change and help improve my impact on others around me. I wrote them down, knowing that I might not remember them at any given time. Some of the things on this list are ‘no-brainers’, and something I try to do anyway from day to day. However, it makes a great reminder and I figure that it could be an outline for how I live.

• Show A Positive Attitude
• Be An Encouragement To Others
• Be Helpful To Others
• Show Example by Making Right Decisions
• Communicate Honestly
• Be Faithful in Commitments
• Compassionate to Others

Now I’m sure that I could always add more, but I figured that this would be a great start. Even though some sound similar to each other, each one has a specific meaning and part. So, to give me a guideline, I’m going to address each of them in my next blog posts! Stay tuned over the next few days!

New Summer Schedule

School has ended for Lydia, and she has just now started a new job. We are now in “week three” with this new schedule. I’m trying to adjust, and of course, so is she. We’ve been so used to staying up late during the weeknights that our bodies are still trying to understand that we can go to bed early. And when we do, we still have a difficult time getting up in the morning!

Actually, Lydia has been doing well with her schedule. She has great “gumption” or “drive” when it comes to something she sets her mind to. She’s been getting up and exercising before I even realize she’s moved out of bed.

I’m trying to be more active too. I plan find things that will keep me active, and yet more involved with the kids. Things like going for bike rides, playing catch, and even walking around the neighborhood. I really want to enjoy this summer.

Lydia has also set us on a new eating diet for the summer (and endless future). We’ll see how it goes. She has waited until after school to try and implement it. I tease her that I’m going to die due to the diet, but I’m willing to try and lose some weight. Of course, this will all be good since I’m wanting to be in better shape when we go on another Cruise next year!

We’re also hoping that now we have more time, we’ll be able to hang out with friends from time to time! Hey, what a neat idea… :) Anyone want to take part in a game-night?

My "Tasks"

I like having a “to-do-list”.

Not that I like having things on the list, but it’s great to have my tasks down on paper. For the most part, I see them as goals to achieve for the day or week. It also holds me accountable for my time. Yes, I have lists for work, for home, and then for design projects I’m working on..

Back in 2010, I tried using the “tasks” feature on gmail to keep me in line. However, at the time, I didn’t find it very practical. So, I’d make my own lists, many time on a piece of notebook paper. Once I started working at KWFC, I made a paper “to-do-list” with checkboxes for each line. I found this to be useful. I’d make a list every week, and then check off what I completed. Those left unchecked would then be transferred to next week’s list. I keep these lists filed, and can pull them out at any time to prove what I’ve done for the week. It’s a great way to keep accountable for my time.

Well, just this past week, I’ve moved back to Google’s Tasks. I found I can add and remove to the list with my phone, besides just using the computer. A friend showed me a neat iPhone app called “GoTasks” that actually allows me to be connected to multiple gmail accounts. This is very helpful since I can use my work account separate from my home account, but yet in one app.

One of the reasons I like Google Tasks is the ability to email and print the tasks. I can specify it to print the completed tasks, so at the end of the work week, my list is then filed. I can also email my task list if needed for staff meetings, etc.

Yes, a “To-Do-List” is a good thing to have. I just have to be sure to follow it!

Blessings through Facebook

Over the past several days, I've seen the power of facebook on how it can be a blessing. Oft times facebook gets a bad reputation. Many use it, but at the same time denounce it as an "evil" in their lives. Some take 'breaks' from it, 'de-friend' individuals over posts, and some have even deactivated their account due their annoyance of others. Yes, there are many times I get frustrated on some of the things people post on Facebook.

There are others that "hate" it. Some are even afraid of Facebook. To me... I see it as a tool. Just like email, letters, and phone calls, it is the modern way of sharing the news of you life and what's going on. It is what it is: Social Networking.

Growing up, we used to send out news once a year to friends and relatives through our Christmas newsletter. This let them know what was going on. Other times, we'd write letters or pay long-distance to make phone calls. Then along came email. We were more connected. We could then find out what's going on much quicker and sooner. We were then sending daily jokes, forwards, and chain-mails. Scanners and digital cameras made the scene and we were sharing those.

By the time I reached college, blogs and MySpace hit. What a better way to share what's going on with our friends and connect with them. Cell phones started getting more common, and after 9/11, they were able to take pictures! I used to send out a weekly email to those on a list to keep them informed of our lives, but then moved to a family blog. Instead of filling up everyone's inbox, you can now check it out whenever you want.

Facebook has been our way of sharing news and recent pictures of our family. I've also been able to use it as my outlet for my strange humor. Sometimes I'll make posts of my own thoughts that have offended others... but it wasn't intentional.

Anyway... why do I like Facebook? It keeps me updated with friends and family. Those I care about. Just recently, it's been used as an awesome prayer request news outlet for friends! There are several that have posted on Facebook on their needs of prayer. What a blessing it has been to be able to reach out and add their requests when talking with God. Not only that, we've been able to see how He's worked in the situation!

Then, I've heard from friends how others' posts have helped them throughout the day. Sometimes I wonder if more people focus on the negativity of Facebook, and we hardly hear the positive. Now there's a thought...

I just think that I too can make a difference from time to time in what I share and post. Can you?

"National Limerick Day"

On this day (May 12) in 1812, English artist, illustrator, author and poet Edward Lear was born. Lear is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry prose and limericks. So in his honor, today is celebrated as "National Limerick Day".

A limerick is a very short, humorous, nonsense poem. Within a limerick there are five lines. The first two lines rhyme with the fifth line and the third and fourth line rhyme together.

I decided to share a few limericks on-air during my show at KWFC Radio.Yes, I couldn't resist. So I'm also sharing them here!

Vinyl records are still around
They carry some amazing sound
If you are able,
get yourself a turntable
The music you hear will astound.

My neighbor came over to say
(Although not in a neighborly way)
That he'd knock me around
If I didn't curb the sound
Of the gospel music I play.

I told him, "Get out of my place
You're an utter uncultured disgrace;
You're a simpleton loon.
Don't you know a good tune?"
Then he walloped me square in the face.

Have a great day!

Bug Tags

When I bought my VW Beetle, I noticed that there wasn't a spot on the front of the vehicle for a license plate. That worried me. In the state of Missouri, it is required to have one on both the front and back.

I looked to see what I could do. There were several options, most of them would cause me to drill into the bumper to place a frame. If I got it wrong, repair would be $500 or more. Yikes!

I then did what any normal computer geek would do, I took my research to the internet. Someone had posted a great idea... Zip-ties.

Sure enough, they work very well on the plastic grill underneath the front bumper! And it works very well. I'm satisfied.

Positive Attitude on Social Media

If you follow me on facebook or twitter, you may notice that I try my best to have humor in my posts. Why? I get tired of reading the negativity on my feeds, so I figure several of you do as well. As a response, I try and put something out there that may get a grin from a friend or follower.

I'm I a nut? Yes, my mind actually works this way. I have a unique sense of humor. And that's what makes Lydia so special. She's the only woman on this world that is able to live with me!!! I often throw in light-hearted comments in serious discussions, which often times drives her crazy. My poor kids have to deal with my puns and sarcastic humor as well.

I've occasionally posted some serious thoughts and gotten some good responses. But those are posts that I've actually put a great deal of time and thought before making. I don't just rush and put some random rant up. I guess I try and think of my posts as a reflection of me, and something that people hold me up to.

Unfortunately, many like to use social media to whine, rant, and play 'vaugebook'. Those who disagree with that assumption are more than likely the ones partaking in the drama. Just take a look at your feed. There are so many who just want to blast others or cause drama. And boy, it can get addictive. Plus, it's easy to get drawn in to comment.

Sure, I'm often tempted to join into the foray, but I'm reminded that it will mostly do more harm than good. That's what this blog is for... I can post my thoughts in a more complete form. I hope. :)

I often wish I could see more positive status posts instead of those that try and bring others down. There is no sense going on there and pointing to others "hey, you're attacking others with your negativity"... otherwise, I'd be doing the same thing. It's best just to post as myself.

So if you want some fun posts to read, follow me!

When It Rains... It Pours.

Sadly it seems that when things get into a damper, it then cascades, leaving us soaked.

Okay, let me explain. When something bad happens, there seems to be more things that follow. This weekend has been a pain with our washing machine situation. If you follow my facebook or family blog that details what goes on in our life, you'll understand the story. (of course, all that has happened this week, won't be published until next week)

I don't fully understand why, and have to just go along for the ride. Some say we're to learn from these experiences that happen in life. Well, to me, some of them don't really have anything to teach. But boy, do they give a great story.

One thing is for sure.... my life isn't boring! Perhaps I need to write it all down and publish it in a book. :)

Good Friday, the Resurrection, and Lewis

One of my favorite authors is CS Lewis. I enjoy the insights of his writings and thoughts on Scripture and Christianity.

Known by many for the Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis had a way of communicating thought without rebuke toward the reader. He made statements that got you to thinking without you feeling attacked. Humbling and effective.

Since today is Good Friday, I found a blog post about Lewis comments on the Resurrection of Christ that I figured I'd share. Well worth reading! http://essentialcslewis.mymiddleearth.com/2014/04/18/lewis-on-the-incarnation-and-resurrection/

Easter Is Coming!

One of the best parts about working for a Southern Gospel radio station is that our music shares the Gospel all year long. So when Easter gets close, we pull out the classic songs with the theme of the crucifixion and resurrection of our Savior. Some are solemn in tone, some with praise, and then you have the ones filled with excitement! They all speak to the heart!

As the holiday is approaching, I love pulling out the commentaries about the crucifixion and resurrection. So many things happened in scripture that I seem to learn something new each year. There are always those little facts that get overlooked, that if you grab just one, you have an entire month's Bible study in front of you!

One of the facts that had slipped by me was that the tomb was empty before sunrise on Sunday. How many times have you heard it mentioned that he rose at the rising the sun? Scripture says it was before the dawn (John 20:1). There is so much you can get from this idea. However, I found it best summed up in this song from 1998, the Dixie Melody Boys: "Before Sunrise The Son Rose".

Easter is coming!

Trusting the HEART

Can you depend on your heart?

Now, I'm not talking about your physical blood-pumping muscle that keeps you alive. I'm talking about your spiritual heart... our soul.

I've heard it taught many times that we're to not trust in our heart. In fact, if you haven't already heard it from the pulpit, even a simple search on the internet can provide several articles from pastors that claim it's un-biblical. Why is that? Well, looking into the Scriptures, we find that the heart "is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked..." (Jeremiah 17:9)

So then, according to these Preachers, Evangelists, and Biblical speakers, how do we make our decisions if we can't use our heart? Simple, we are to put our sole trust in our pastors, as they are our "genuine God-given authority" over all things. They then continue with comments that we're not to question any in leadership or authority. If you disagree, then your heart is not right, and you have a rebellious spirit.

However, they tend to forget to put the verse in Jeremiah into full context. When you read verse 5 - "Cursed is the man who trusts in man". Now, move along to verse 7 - “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lordwhose trust is the Lord."

Then look in Psalms 118:8 - "[It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." Now, I'm not saying you can't trust pastor, especially if he is Scripturally sound in teaching and leadership. But even doing so is putting your heart behind man. That is were we have to be careful. (Psalm 118:8) As a Christian, it is up to ourselves to rightly discern Scripture. 2 Timothy 2:15 - "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Still the question remains... Can we depend our heart? Yes. We can only trust God through our HEART! Proverbs 3:5 - "Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding."

We can't leave it with man... it is ours to guard!!! (Proverbs 4:23) When we accept Jesus into our heart, his blood has washed and cleaned us from sin! (1 John 1:9) It's a promise we can hold to, that this is for our life. Because He is faithful, we cannot help but rejoice and praise Him with our HEART... but not the old one. We are given a NEW heart! Ezekiel 36:26 - "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh." By the way, "an heart of flesh" means a "tender heart"! Talk about something to praise Him for!

I get excited when I'm reminded of Matthew 5:8 - "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God". Wow! What a promise. Since Christ lives within me, I can follow my heart. Psalm 73:26 - "My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."

There is one thing that Christians often fail to remember, we can't correct a heart of sin. Only God can, through the power of His saving Grace. A person can't have a change of heart until they have given God control. It seems that Christians want to 'correct' the world before the world can come to Christ. We see the push for preaching and teaching of judgment and rebuke, trying to "hit the lost over the head" with the truth of their sin. There's a feeling that we must blast the lost with their failures and show vengeance against them for their evil souls.

However, the Bible clearly states on what topic we should be preaching to the lost... THE GOSPEL - the Good News of Jesus our Savior. Christ commands it! (Mark 16:15) This good news is that he wants a relationship with us. His atonement frees our heart from the bonds of sin and wickedness!

Remember, we are created in GOD's image. He is LOVE. Our heart is to be after His. Philippians 4:7 - "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

I'll end this post with this awesome verse... Psalm 27:4 - "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."
