In The News:
- National Dentist’s Day… us to say, “Thank you” to the person who keeps our pearly whites in tip-top order every 6 months. Be kind to your dentist… he has fillings too.
- Daylight Saving Time. We “spring forward” Saturday night/Sunday morning. A survey found 28 percent of people are happy with the time shift, 31 percent want to be on Daylight Saving Time all year, and 40 percent want to stick to standard time. While nine states passed legislation to remain on Daylight Saving Time in the past three years alone, they can’t do that until congress lets them.
- Childhood is US now safer. Young people in the United States are safer than in the 1970s or 1990s, according to a long-term study. Duke University’s Child Well-Being Index has been recording the state of childhood in the US since 1975. Children and teenagers are less likely to be victims of violent crime, while risky behaviors like binge drinking and smoking cigarettes are in decline… But researchers say safer lives could also reflect the fact that children spend much more time indoors. This could also be linked to another big trend, the rise in childhood obesity, now almost four times more prevalent than in the 1970s. Researchers say the reduction in physical danger has followed a trend for young people to spend more time at home playing computer games or using laptops or phones.
- Men washing hands. The spread of the new coronavirus is shining the spotlight on a little-discussed gender split: men wash their hands after using the bathroom less than women. Health officials around the world advise that deliberate, regular handwashing is one of the best weapons against the virus which causes a flu-like respiratory illness that can kill and has spread to around 80 countries… The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online fact sheet titled “Handwashing: A Corporate Activity,” cites a 2009 study that finds “only 31% of men and 65% of women washed their hands” after using a public restroom… According to a 2013 Michigan State study, women wash their hands significantly more often, use soap more often, and wash their hands somewhat longer than men. The study found 14.6 percent of men did not wash their hands at all after using the bathroom and 35.1 percent wet their hands but did not use soap, compared to 7.1 percent and 15.1 percent. of women.
- National Frozen Food Day. fruits, vegetables, and meats…. Entire meals.
- No lonely Hamsters. A man in Germany went on vacation but left his stereo and lights on in his apartment. After neighbors alerted police to the loud, continuous music, cops — fearing the man had died — broke into the home. A friend of the man said he left the music on so his hamster wouldn’t feel lonely.
- Wrong house. A man in Florida (Apopka) says an intruder came into his house after dark, and he fought with him while simultaneously trying to call 911. The man ran toward a neighbor’s house. The homeowner says he “kind of said to myself, ‘Dude, you’re going to the wrong house. I know this girl; she’s not going to put up with that.” The neighbor “girl,” Bridget Erwin, says the man got into her house by smashing the back door with an axe. Erwin, who was home with her two children, simply pulled her pistol and shot the intruder. She’s a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. She then handcuffed the intruder and gave him medical attention, saving his life.
- elbow-bumping. To stay virus-free, people are handshaking less and elbow-bumping more. [I prefer to head-butt.]
- National Employee Appreciation Day
- Knitting behind the wheel. Police in Ohio are warning of the dangers of distracted driving after a woman was caught on camera knitting behind the wheel. The Columbus Division of Police tweeted a video showing a driver at a stop light in Upper Arlington knitting behind the wheel of her vehicle. Ohio law classifies distracted driving as a secondary offense, meaning police are not allowed to use it as the sole reason for pulling a driver over, but they can issue tickets for the offense if the traffic stop occurs for another violation. So they posted the video online instead.
- Ruth in Jail. A North Carolina woman fulfilled a unique birthday wish when she turned 100 years old on Thursday. She went to jail. Ruth Bryant was celebrating her 100th birthday at the Cambridge Hills Assisted Living Center in Roxboro when a group of sheriff's deputies crashed the party. It was a gag. They handcuffed her, placed her in a patrol car. At the station, she received an orange jumpsuit, took a fake mugshot, and spent a few minutes in a jail cell. Bryant said she had never been to jail before and was happy to cross it off her bucket list. https://www.kmov.com/news/i-m-in-the-jailhouse-now--year-old-woman/article_9c29450b-68fb-544b-974a-f055d1eaff2a.html
