In The News:
- National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual event is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading creative by the National Education Association. Since the event is designed to encourage reading in children and is fostered through the schools, when March 2nd lands on a weekend, the day is observed on the closest school day. Pick up an interesting book and read it. More importantly, read with a child.
- Shared leap day birthday. A baby girl born in California on Saturday and her father share the rare distinction of being born on a leap day. Mercy San Juan Medical Center shared photos of newborn Camila dressed in a frog outfit and her father Ivan PeƱaloza both of whom were born on Feb. 29. "The odds of a parent sharing a birthday with their child on leap year is 1 in 2.1 million," the hospital wrote."
- Drink Potato Chips. Forget the tedious (and greasy) way of eating a bag of potato chips — a Japanese company has invented a way to let us drink them. It’s a gadget called the Poterapper. It doesn’t turn potato chips into an actual liquid form — it gives the user a way to shove potato chips into their mouth with ease. You crush your potato chips in the bag, then cut a corner of the bag open and attach the Poterapper spout.
- Nacho Cheese getaway. A man in the UK was caught fleeing from a restaurant — covered in nacho cheese. The man had just argued with a waitress, who asked the man to leave. When the man refused a manager came to the table and told him police had been called. For some reason the man grabbed a large bowl of nacho cheese dip and poured it all over the manager and himself. Cops caught the stick guy a few blocks away.
- National Old Stuff Day gives notice to all that old stuff and encourages you to try something new. Well, maybe not ALL the old stuff, but some of it. It’s a day to break out of the old routines and experience new ones. #ReadAcrossAmericaDay or #DrSeussDay
- 8-ft beehive. A wildlife control company shared photos from a Virginia apartment in which an 8-foot-long beehive was found inside the living room ceiling. Virginia Wildlife Management and Control said a crew was summoned to a Richmond apartment building Monday where the property owner had previously reported bees coming through the ducts. The crew discovered there was a hive inside the ceiling over the living room of the unoccupied apartment. The hive was large enough for up to 150,000 bees, but it "was not fully occupied" when the specialists found it.
- Longest line of books. Guinness World Records confirmed a New York state-based nonprofit broke a world record by assembling a line of books 3.81 miles long.
The record-keeping organization said more than 150 volunteers from Freeport-based nonprofit The Book Fairies set up a line of 31,000 books winding through two connecting elementary schools in Wyandanch for a total distance of 3.81 miles. Guinness said the distance was sufficient to beat the previous record, a 2.6-mile line of books created in Illinois. The books used in the record were donated to Wyandanch residents.
- Venomous snake found behind toaster. An Australian snake catcher shared a video of an unusual callout for a highly venomous snake found hiding behind the toaster in a family's kitchen. Stuart McKenzie of Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 said in a Facebook post that he responded to a home Wednesday in Rosemount, Queensland, where a family spotted a snake behind the toaster on their kitchen counter. McKenzie identified the serpent as an eastern brown snake, one of the most venomous species in the world. "He was pretty comfortable up there curled up and minding his own business. He nearly got tangled in the toaster cord but I was able to bag him up safely," McKenzie wrote.

- Snakes under a deck. A Colorado couple who kept finding snakes in and around their home called in experts, who removed more than 150 of the reptiles from a large den under their back deck. Shaynon McFadden and Royce Robins said their bought their Elizabeth home in November 2018, and the following spring they started noticing snakes popping up from between the wooden slats of their back deck. The couple said they noticed as the months went on that snakes were appearing in their yard, around the foundation and even inside their home.
