- National Caramel Popcorn Day conjures up memories of fairs, sporting events, and fun snacking.
- Found new masks. In Memphis, Baptist Hospital found 30,000 old masks in storage but all the elastic was rotten. Hundreds of Memphis residents are sewing new elastic on them so they can be used in the hospital.
- Return of the Milkman. While some may consider the milkman a relic of yesteryear, many milk delivery services are experiencing a surge in orders as supermarket-wary residents stay home due to the coronavirus outbreak… The business of milk delivery started to decline with the rise of supermarkets and spacious refrigeration cases. In 1963, about 30 percent of consumers still received home milk deliveries (U.S. Department of Agriculture).
- Rescue Ducks. As many of us are going “quackers” quarantined at home, Tamara Hein is passing the time with her rescue ducks Gabby and Olivia. The ducks share a Tampa, Florida, townhome with Hein, her husband, and their rescue pup Diogi. Hein says, “Ducks, like people, need companionship too. So they look to me and my husband and our dog. Since I raised Gabby, for example, he thinks I am his flock.” … The rescue ducks are enjoying have extra time with their human companions during self isolation. Hein says, “During quarantine, they are watching me do a lot of housework. The laundry is caught up and the kitchen is going through a deep clean, they are fascinated by that.” … Hein first became a mother duck two years ago when she rescued Q Duck, a disabled duck who used a wheelchair to get around. Since his passing in late 2019, her flock and side yard have expanded.

- National Tartan Day on April 6th honors the Scottish heritage flowing through the United States. On March 20, 1998, the United States Senate passed Resolution 155, designating April 6th of each year as National Tartan Day. The day recognizes Scottish Americans and their achievements and contributions to the United States. The House passed Resolution 41 on March 9, 2005, and George W. Bush signed the Presidential Proclamation on April 4, 2008.
- Babies are scientists. Babies are already smarter than most people realize, but to further their development, they may need an occasional surprise. Researchers (Johns Hopkins) ran a series of experiments to test the idea that babies behave like little scientists when things break with their expectations about the world. One experiment seemed to show an object floating. The babies would more often drop the object to see if it would float again. Essentially the babies were behaving like little scientists. Other studies already showed preschoolers and older children engaged in this kind of learning behavior, but this research showed that those tendencies exist in children of all ages.
- Wedding unplanning. There are 2.2 million weddings performed annually in the U.S. every year, and due to cancellations and statewide lockdowns the $54.4 billion wedding business is in a tailspin and couples are forced to make impossible choices around their special day. … According to surveys from Wedding Report, it’s estimated 6.5 percent of couples are cancelling their weddings, 28 percent are trying to move the dates to the back half of 2020, 22.5 percent are pushing it back to 2021, and 43 percent are not doing anything at this time.
- On this day in 1930: Hostess Twinkies were invented.
- Drug dealers text wrong person. Authorities in Germany said three accused drug dealers were arrested after they texted the wrong person. The dealers thought they were texting a group of customers — and they were — but one of those who was texted was a detective, who set up a buy and busted the men.
- Streaming subscriptions are up. Consumers are soldering the cord, or whatever the opposite of cutting the cord is. Paid subscriptions for streaming TV and video was up 32 percent for the week of March 16-22 compared to the prior week.
- On this day in 1896: The first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens, Greece.
- Twins named Covid and Corona. A boy and a girl born in the midst of India’s coronavirus lockdown have been named after the deadly virus. The parents of Covid and Corona hope the twins’ names will serve as a reminder of the hardships they overcame as they were brought into the world during the pandemic. But the couple (from Raipur) say they might change their minds later and rename the children.
