In The News:
- Multitasking is bad. If you think that a computer screen jam-packed with email, Excel documents, and multiple web browser tabs makes you a good multitasker, scientific research begs to differ. Scientists say juggling email, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave. They say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information. The resulting distractions can have deadly consequences, as when cellphone-wielding drivers and train engineers cause wrecks. And for millions of people, these urges can inflict nicks and cuts on creativity and deep thought, interrupting work and family life.
- Escape Prisoner Found at home. Police in England received a tip about where a prison escapee was living. Sure enough, the man had been living in his own home for 18 months. Police never checked the house for the escapee.
- Socially distant selfies. It’s generally unsafe to take group selfies during a pandemic, but Apple might have a way to make that work in the future. The iPhone maker has received a patent for creating a “synthetic group selfie.” You could invite people to a selfie session where the software would place people as if they were right behind you. The pics could include recorded or even livestreamed videos, and the participants could edit the shots to put themselves front and center. There are no guarantees that patents will translate to finished products — Apple is only exploring an idea.

- Golden Gate Bridge now “Sings”. Motorists crossing the Golden Gate Bridge will now hear a strange sound - the bridge 'singing' as they cross. The sound, which has been compared to a "giant, wheezing kazoo", is the result of a redesign to the bridge's bike path railings, which produce the sound when winds are high. While the 'singing' might be annoying to some, the changes allow wind to flow more smoothly and safely over the bridge structure.
- New car for Protest cleanup. A Buffalo teen who spent hours cleaning up after a protest has been rewarded - with a car and a scholarship. 18-year-old Antonio Gwynn Jr. made headlines last week when he spent 10 straight hours picking up trash following protests in his home city. After Gwynn's story appeared on CNN and local news, a neighbor stepped up to give Gwynn at 2004 Mustang convertible. A local business chipped in with a year of free car insurance, and Buffalo's Medaille College offered him a full scholarship.
- $1 Million Treasure Found. A treasure chest holding a million dollars' worth of gold and jewels has been found buried in the Rocky Mountains. No, this isn't a movie plot - it's the brainchild of eccentric art collector Forrest Fenn, who hid the chest 10 years ago and published a series of clues in a poem. Thousands of people have searched for the treasure over the last decade, including at least four who died in the process. The 89-year-old Fenn confirmed the chest was found but didn't reveal its exact location, saying it was "under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains". As for how he feels now, Fenn said "I feel halfway kind of glad, halfway kind of sad because the chase is over".
- Women sits on robber. A 266-pound Russian housewife held a robber captive for more than an hour by sitting on him. When her daughter returned home, the woman called police. The man was treated for swollen and bruised limbs.
