- Facebook has a bad reputation — but a new study says it may actually improve your mental health. Many studies report that the more time users spend on Facebook, the worse they feel. Some researchers even claim the platform can ruin a person’s overall well-being. But these previous Facebook studies failed to “isolate new tech from youth,” says Michigan State University media professor Keith Hampton. He says, “Taking a snapshot of anxiety felt by young people today and concluding that a whole generation is at risk because of social media ignores more noteworthy social changes. Hampton tracked data on more than 13,000 adult relationships from a 2015 and 2016 household survey, which included questions on communication technologies and psychological distress. Social media users, Hampton found, are 63 percent less likely to experience serious psychological distress including depression and anxiety year over year.

Rooms started at $169 per night, with no minimum required stay. The Bell, which is taking over the V Palm Springs Hotel, will open its doors August 8 and close August 12.

- Women are better with hammers! Researchers say men are better at using a hammer in the dark, but that women are more accurate during the day. They tested the “hammering performance” of a range of people, under various lighting conditions, measuring how easily they could knock a nail into a block of wood. They found some people were naturals — getting the job done after a few clean strokes of the hammer — whereas others ended up with the nail bent in the middle or a sore thumb. But the research team (University of Massachusetts) discovered men were better when the lights were turned off, while women were more accurate in proper lighting conditions.

- Cats may rule the internet, but spiders dominate our nightmares. In a new study, published in The Journal of Psychology, researchers (Charles University) showed volunteers 25 different animal images to gauge their fear and disgust. Spiders were the clear winner. Cats were at the extreme opposite end of the scale
