In The News:
- The next big food craze? Bugs, according to a new report from financial analysts. This week, Barclays analysts predicted that 'edible insects' will explode into an $8 billion dollar industry by the year 2030, as demand for meat alternatives grows. Some of the factors cited in the report include the increasing demand for plant-based proteins, a growing global population, and a younger generation that is less turned off by the idea of eating insects. The report points out that sushi is now commonplace, when it was once considered a 'weird and whacky' food. Currently, about 2 billion people around the world eat bugs regularly.
- A new study (by eligibility.com) found 89 percent of us Google our health symptoms before going to their doctor. According to the study, respondents said they wanted to find out the severity of their health condition before going to a doctor. The problem, say doctors, is that they often have to spend a lot of time explaining to a patient what they don’t have, versus telling them what they do have.
- What happens when your son is addicted to a video game that requires him to keep pace with other players, but he also needs to study for the most important exam in his life? Instead of straight up banning her son from playing online, a mother in China decided to play the game for her boy, relieving him of the stress of maintaining the game’s progress and allowing him to focus on his studies. The mom’s strategy worked — her son did well on his college entrance exam and he kept his status level in his video game. The son said, “When she first started she was a noob. She seems to like the game more than I do now.” ….. Wait…. Her “college” son????
- With wedding season in full swing, guests everywhere are asking the same question: How much money should I give the newlyweds? Though most guests will spend an average of $109 this year, the average cost rises to around $150 if the recipient is a close family member.
- In England, a guy broke into a residence and stole several items, including a smartphone. The next day he used that phone to call himself a cab. What he didn’t know was that the phone he stole belonged to a cabdriver for the very cab company he called. The phone operator recognized the cabbie’s name on caller ID and, being aware of the break-in, sent the cops rather than a cab.
- A slug has been blamed for a power outage that halted dozens of trains and delayed 12,000 passengers in Japan. The company was forced to cancel 26 trains and delay other services after the slug made its way into an electrical power device installed near rail tracks.
