- on this day in 1975: Sony introduced the Betamax videocassette recorder for sale to the public. It was the first VCR. Eventually the VHS format proved more successful.
- Boynton Beach, Florida, police received a phone call from a Texas Roadhouse restaurant saying they heard beeping in the dumpster behind the kitchen; they feared it was a bomb. Staff and diners waited in the parking lot while the bomb squad investigated. The source of the beeping was a battery-operated thermometer.
- A study shows less than half of men washed their hands with soap and water after using public restrooms. What’s more, 20 percent didn’t even bother running their hands under water. Women shouldn’t start congratulating themselves too soon. Fully 66 percent did wash their hands with soap and water, but that leaves 33 percent that didn’t. Seven percent left the restroom without even rinsing their hands. Teenagers were least likely to wash their hands.
