- A Minnesota woman said her pet cat is down one of his nine lives after taking a 35-minute ride in the washing machine with a load of laundry. Stefani Carroll-Kirchoff said she checked on her laundry at the end of a 35-minute cycle and spotted a paw belonging to her 1-year-old cat, Felix, sticking out from among the wet clothes. Felix was rushed to an animal hospital where veterinarians said he had pneumonia from the water in his lungs. He is expected to make a full recovery.
- Could our favorite morning drink also help fight one of its biggest health issues, obesity? That’s the suggestion from a British study (University of Nottingham) that finds coffee stimulates the human body’s “brown fat,” a heat-generating form of fat that literally burns calories in a process called thermogenesis. … However, at least one obesity and nutrition expert (Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC) said it’s too early to label coffee a dieter’s best friend.
- Sick but still going to work? You’ll probably end up taking more sick days in the future than colleagues who stay at home when unwell, according to a Swedish study. Researchers (Karolinska Institute of Stockholm) found that employees who often go to work feeling sick — termed “sickness presenteeism” — have higher rates of future work absences due to illness.
- Research shows that knitting and other forms of textile crafting such as sewing, weaving and crocheting have quite a lot in common with mindfulness and meditation: all are reported to have a positive impact on mind health and well-being. In an online survey of more 3,545 knitters, the study found a significant relationship between the frequency of knitting and respondents’ perceived mood and feelings. Frequent knitters (those who knitted more than 3 times a week) were calmer, happier, less sad, less anxious, and more confident.
