  • MEN NEED HUGS AND CUDDLES _ Men need hugs and cuddles. Research discovered that men happily admit they need a big ‘ol hug as life gets hectic. Hugs are the No. 1 mood changer for men and women. Other mood changers include music, fresh air, a cup of coffee or tea, chatting with a friend, and watching a favorite movie.

  • A study (Nationwide Children’s Hospital) finds a smoke alarm that broadcasts a mother’s voice would wake children much more quickly than alarms that blast high-pitched tones. Sleeping children, as it turns out, are fairly impervious to the screeching of a smoke alarm. Researchers found that most children ages 5 through 8 took more than five minutes to wake up with a standard alarm, as compared with around four seconds when they heard the sound of their mother’s voice.

  • Two Months until Christmas
  • On this day in 2001: Windows XP was released.
  • Turkeys DO fly! Jess Downing was riding her red 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle on the way to her masonry job in Chester, New Hampshire, the other day when a turkey perched on a stone wall in a field decided to take flight. Downing had no time to react when the big bird took off and flew into her, knocking her off the bike. Downing broke her right hand and suffered some scrapes on her right leg. She was wearing a helmet, gloves, jeans and a sweatshirt. While Downing is recovering from her injuries, the turkey wasn’t so lucky. It was killed by the impact. Downing got to keep the turkey.
  • A man who was house-sitting for his parents in California set the home on fire after he used a blowtorch to kill spiders. The man who was trying to kill black widow spiders made it out of the home safely. No one else was home at the time.
  • Food researchers say ice cream tastes better when licked from a cone than eaten from a spoon.

  • A new survey finds six in 10 women wish they had a longer day, with three hours and 36 minutes being the ideal amount of extra time to maintain their social, career and home lives. … Half of those polled are sacrificing sleep in order to fit things in — like daily exercise, additional work, or more family time.
  • There’s a good chance that about 11% of the text messages you send and receive are deceptive. Researchers (Cornell University) examined over 5,000 texts and found that 10.7% of them are used to tell people we’re some place we’re not, or that we “have to go” when we really just want to end a conversation.   • Today in 1940: The 40-hour work week went into effect in the United States.

In The News:
  • I’m curious to know if you mothers find this old study to be true. Around 20 years ago University of Arizona researchers found that expectant mothers can use the power of intuition to learn the gender of their unborn babies. Women who claimed to have an intuition about the gender of their child made the right choice 70% of the time.
  • Keeping their little superheros and cute characters safe is a huge priority for most parents during the fall activities, with 83% saying they check their children’s candy for anything dangerous before they let them eat it. Once the candy has been given the tasty stamp of approval, it turns out that 62% of parents admit to secretly eating their kids’ candy.
  • A woman in Switzerland called police to report that a burglar had broken into the office where she was working alone late at night. When officers arrived she told them she really needed them to remove a spider. They did and gave her a warning.
  • A Florida (Lee County) teen is accused of reckless driving and fleeing deputies. They say the 19-year-old kept driving his motorcycle after they tried to stop him after he blew past a stop sign. When deputies caught up with the teen the discovered he fled from them because he was on his way to a job interview. [I wonder if was pizza delivery boy]
  • Employees at a Des Moines, Washington, grocery store called police after a woman tried to buy a prepaid Visa card with $4,900 in what they believed to be counterfeit money. Police said the bills were pretty good copies, but many of them had the same serial number. And there were bright pink Chinese characters printed on the front of each bill.
  • A bystander called the West Midlands, England, police because they saw through a bank window what looked like employees huddling under tables and desks. Was it a bank robbery? When armed officers arrived at the bank they found employees playing hide and seek. It turned out to be a team building exercise.

  • HOUSE CLEANERS CLEAN WRONG HOUSE _ Some homeowners in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who thought they had been robbed got a nice surprise instead: Their house was cleaned for free by cleaners who went to the wrong address. The two women went to the home Tuesday afternoon. The door had been left unlocked so a neighbor could walk the owner’s dog, so the women went right in and got to work. Nothing was taken. Nothing was disturbed. The house was cleaned up. Police tracked down one of the cleaners late Wednesday and say she was very apologetic.
  • A man with a knife who attempted to rob a Colorado gas station ended up walking out of the convenience store $2 poorer. Police say the man put $2 on the counter to buy a Snickers bar. When the clerk took the cash, the suspect pulled out a knife and demanded the money in the cash register. The clerk slammed the drawer shut, backed away and called 911. The suspect reportedly leaned over the counter and tried punching the buttons on the register, but got nothing and walked out. He even left behind the Snickers.
  • When author Amy Latta first came up with the idea of using a pumpkin as a place to write down things her family was grateful for seven years ago, she didn't have a blog. She was just looking for a way to teach her son Noah, then 3, about Thanksgiving without getting "caught up in the craziness of the holidays. Amy had taken Noah to a pumpkin patch near their home in Hampstead, Maryland, and brought home several pumpkins. On a whim, she grabbed one and started writing things they were grateful for on it with a permanent marker.  In 2012, Amy posted about the tradition on her blog, Amy Latta Creations.   • WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A SEARS GIFT CARD _ Use it now. The stores, including Kmart and Shop Your Way, are still around, but you’ll want to use your gift cards as soon as possible. 46 Sears and Kmart stores will close by November, and 142 more will close by the end of the year, and it’s possible the retailer’s doors will close for good. USA Today reports that “liquidation sales at the additional stores are expected to begin within two weeks.” If Sears closes its doors for good, a bankruptcy court will decide whether or not the gift cards need to be honored.

  • Too old to game? After years of blurry vision, a 102-year-old woman in China said she finally decided to undergo eye surgery because it was affecting her video gaming. But it’s not Fortnite, Call of Duty or even Angry Birds she’s playing. She’s been a hardcore fan of Solitaire since 2002 but was having trouble playing because of cataracts. Now that her eyesight’s better the 102-year-old has been told she can play her favorite video game up to 30 minutes at a time.

  • Half of us has cracked or broken a smartphone screen at one time or another. And it was probably because we dropped it. Someone did a survey on cracked screens and the result is not at all surprising. The other big reasons we break our screens: forgetting it’s in a back pocket and sitting down; a child dropping it; trying to toss it onto a bed or sofa and it bouncing off; throwing it when we’re angry.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings is the latest chain to jump on the pumpkin spice train with their new wing flavor: BBQ pumpkin spice Ale sauce . According to the company website, “This limited-time only Sauce Lab creation mixed BBQ flavors and pumpkin spice to create the new wing flavor..” Yes, BBQ Pumpkin Ale sauce is available in restaurants beginning October 1 through the end of the month only.

  • Oreos are as addictive as cocaine, at least for lab rats, and just like us, they like the creamy center best. Researchers (at Connecticut College) found eating the sugary treats activates more neurons in the brain’s “pleasure center” than drugs such as cocaine.
  • Warner Bros. is going cartoon crazy as they set up a slew of animation-inspired movies. New Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, Flintstones movies and more are currently in the works. The plan is for animated features and live-action hybrids.
