- A new study (McMaster University) shows as little as 20 seconds of brisk stair climbing, done several times a day, might be enough exercise to improve fitness. The study finds that people can complete a meaningful series of insta-workouts without leaving their office building or even changing out of their dress shoes, offering hope — and eliminating excuses — for those of us convinced that we have inadequate time, expertise, income or footwear to exercise.
- A new study shows a regular serving of fried chicken is associated with a higher risk of death. The study, which looked at the food habits of 107,000 women, found those who enjoyed fried chicken once or more per day had a 13% higher risk of death compared with women who did not eat any fried food.
- New research confirms what many have suspected for years: Having more information about food can help people make smarter food purchases. According to a survey, 69 percent of people look at nutritional facts to get food information and 67 percent get information from the ingredient list.
- Liars take longer to tell their story. Research shows it takes on average 30% longer to tell a fib than to be honest.
- If you’re caught throwing your speeding ticket out your car window, it could cost you big bucks for littering — according to the Manitoba, Canada, police. On Tuesday they showed dash cam video of a female driver crumpling up her speeding ticket and throwing it out her window — all in front of the officer who issued it. The driver was dinged for $174 for the littering, plus the fine for speeding.
