- The inductees into this year’s National Toy Hall of Fame class are Magic the Gathering, Matchbox Cars, and coloring book… The inductees were chosen among other finalists: Care Bears, Fisher-Price Corn Popper, Jenga, Masters of the Universe, My Little Pony, Nerf Blaster, Risk, smartphone, and top.
- In India, 25,000 students went after a world record by all brushing their teeth at the same time.
- People all over the United States received seemingly random text messages early Thursday. The messages, according to multiple people who posted about them on Reddit and Twitter, arrived from friends and relatives who said they did not send them. Some said they were messages that were supposed to have been sent on Valentine’s Day this year, but, for some reason, never were… At this point, it’s not really clear why this is happening, but at least one wireless provider confirmed that people aren’t imagining these random texts. A T-Mobile spokesperson said, “This is not a T-Mobile issue. It’s a third party vendor issue that also affected other networks. We’re aware of this and it is resolved.” Sprint blamed it on a “maintenance update.”
- Four in 10 Americans would prefer to take on extra work than deal with a sick co-worker. But when they’re the ones feeling under the weather, employees aren’t so willing to stay home: When it comes to a bad cough, 69 percent feel it’s not a valid reason to stay home from work. And one in three fear their boss wouldn’t consider it a valid reason to stay home from work either — but 52 percent will assume someone is sick if they start coughing… Overall, 78 percent of employed respondents say they feel pressure to power through the workday when they’re feeling under the weather, ignoring common advice to take time to rest and recharge.
- It’s Okay to swear? When would that be? A British researcher said his study indicates using swear words increases a person’s tolerance for pain. The researcher (Keele University) said he compared the pain tolerance of 67 students of both sexes when they each dropped a hand into ice-cold water. He said most of the subjects found their pain tolerances increased when they were allowed to exclaim swear words as opposed to neutral language.
- If you’ve traveled aboard, you’ve probably bought a couple things at a local market. In many cultures, merchants expect you to haggle a bit. But by how much? Travel blog Tourist Meets Traveler suggests 35% discount as a good starting point.
