In The News:
- Burger Day

- on this day in 1902: President Theodore Roosevelt became the first U.S. chief executive to ride in an automobile, in Hartford, Connecticut.

- 99 percent of exported bananas are of the Cavendish variety. And the Cavendish is facing an “existential crisis” in the form of a fungus called Tropical Race 4 which infects bananas plants through their roots and has spread from Asia to Latin America. Salvation may come, however, thanks to gene-editing which could make Cavendishes that are resistant to the fungus.

- An official in Missouri is urging people not to set their flood-damaged homes on fire after more than 20 firefighters spent more than two hours battling a blaze. Central County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Steve Brown said Wednesday in a news release that setting fires after flooding is unfortunately not uncommon. But he urged people to use proper methods to remove damaged buildings, saying fires “create a dangerous situation for neighbors and first responders.”

- If you’re heading somewhere very crowded and you’d rather not lose your children there, highly visible clothing colors might help. The blog Hint Mama shares this simple tip: dress the entire family in the same, bright colors. Hideous, yes, but useful in crowded areas.

- Claims that Facebook or Instagram are changing their terms of service and will make everything public unless users repost some poorly worded legal text are completely bogus — still. The message went viral earlier this week, and was even shared by celebrities. A Facebook spokesperson said Wednesday that there is no truth to the post, which dates back to 2012.

- A woman in upstate New York made the catch of a lifetime when she reeled in a fish that appears to have two mouths. Debbie Geddes says she caught the unique fish while she was out on a lake (Lake Champlain) with her husband. Debbie said, “When we got it in the boat I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Two mouths! And yet this fish was healthy and thriving. Pretty amazing!” They took a few pictures and released the fish.

- In a survey 74% of us think we’re a better driver than everyone else on the road.

- A woman in China has recovered only a small portion of her savings after termites snacked on the hidden bills. The bugs ate through $1,625, which had been hidden in her closet.

- Careful talking with your hands! In Sweden, a man giving a speech at an aquarium absentmindedly stretched his hand back over a glass enclosure and was bitten by a crocodile.
