In The News:
- On this day in 1920: The first commercial radio station, 8MK (WWJ), began operations in Detroit, Michigan.

- National Radio Day & Bacon Lover’s Day

- A study has found that people are more likely to be dissatisfied with their house if it is smaller than their neighbors’. This study provides evidence that people care not only about their house’s features, but their relative position: how their house compares in size to those of their immediate neighbors. Daniel Kuhlmann, an assistant professor at Iowa State University, said, “Although we may not realize it, our housing decisions may affect our neighbors’ actions … by building a large house we could unwittingly push our neighbors to spend more money to buy larger homes to catch up.” Kuhlmann says this is one possible explanation for the steady increase in the size of single-family houses in the U.S. over the last 50 years.

- The world’s oldest webcam will be shut down at the end of this month. The San Francisco FogCam is named for the shrouded view it offers of the San Francisco State University campus where the cam’s creators were taking classes. It’s the oldest continually operating webcam in the world, and has been running for 25 years. It will be shut down because it no longer has a really good view, and there’s no good place to put the camera.

- A German woman thought she had been robbed when she returned to her car to find $700 missing. Then she noticed her dog was vomiting so she took the dog to a vet. The vet gave the dog an injection and after 20 minutes six of the missing bills reappeared. The dog spit out the rest of the money in shreds along with some bank statements.

- What temperature do you set your thermostat at when you’re hanging around doing stuff in your house in the summer? Probably no higher than 75 degrees, right? Do you change the temperature setting in your home when you go to bed? Maybe lower it? How about when you know you aren’t going to home for awhile?… Energy Star, the federal program from the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, says the coolest you should keep your home is 78 degrees when you’re home… 85 when you’re at work or away… and 82 while you’re sleeping.

- In England, four robbers entered a coin shop armed with guns and knives. They whipped out several large sacks and stuffed them full of valuable coins. Perhaps they should have done a little weight training before taking on the job. The sacks were so full and so heavy that they couldn’t lift them. Not wanting to take the time to remove any of the loot, the crooks fled empty-handed.

- What about caffeine? A morning cup of coffee doesn’t just wake you up. According to a study from the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, it may also lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by keeping your cholesterol levels in check — which is associated with the disease. That doesn’t mean you should chug coffee all day long. One cup a day helps prevent Alzheimer’s — but more than three cups can result in anxiety, headaches, nausea and sleeplessness.

Fun Fact:There are 28 doctors in the U.S. with the last name of Doctor. #funfact
