- Facebook says it reached 2½ billion users in the last part of 2019.

- Quit work today. This Friday, January 31 is, according to research, the most popular day (in the most popular month) for people to quit their job, as those back in the saddle after the holidays find themselves staring at the year’s calendar and questioning the point of it all. For some, the urge may be fueled by a dread of keeping up the work routine after kids go back to school; for others it could be down to the fact January is a dull month.

- New year's diets. It’s the end of January and by now more than one-third of people who made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight have broken it. By March, only 13% will still be on their diet, and by April only 7% will be hanging on.

DiRoma claimed the law is vague and doesn’t prohibit an upside down license plate on a motorcycle.

- Google pays hackers. Paying hackers is not a bad thing. Which is why PayPal recently paid $15,300 to one; Tesla is offering $500,000 to anyone who can hack a Tesla Model 3; and Apple is prepared to cough up $1.5 million to iPhone hackers. Not to be outdone, Google has added a bonus to the $1 million offer to any hackers that compromise the security element on Pixel devices.… Since 2010 Google has paid out more than $21 million in rewards. In 2019 alone, roughly $6.5 million in rewards were paid by Google — twice as much as has ever been rewarded in a single year before.

The July trip was accompanied by scientists from Newcastle University in England and carried the submersible to the ship’s resting place about 12,500 feet below the North Atlantic surface. Expedition leader Rob McCallum confirmed there had been “contact” with the Titanic because of strong currents, but insisted that any damage could only have been minor… The expedition revealed that Titanic Capt. Edward John Smith’s bathtub had disappeared inside the deteriorating remains.

- Is it OK to eat snow? Anne Nolin, a professor at University of Nevada, Reno says: “Everyone should eat snow because it’s really fun.” Nolin, who studies snow and ice in the climate system, says most snow is just as clean as any drinking water. To make their way from a cloud to the ground, cold water molecules have to cling to particles of dust or pollen to form the ice crystals that then grow into snowflakes in a process called deposition. These, Nolin points out, are the same tiny particles we normally breathe. Plus, as snowflakes fall, they have a harder time picking up soot and other air pollutants than raindrops, which are better at picking up these particulates… Once the snow is on the ground, it stays clean until other things land on top of it. So if you’re planning to eat snow, eat it fresh.

- We’ve been following Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo’s adorable and widely beloved hippopotamus, for years now. Well, she just turned 3 a few days ago, and of course this was cause for celebration. In all, 43% blamed their measly family time on their kids spending too much time in front of the television, with another 51% saying their kids spend too much time in their bedrooms. Another 44% said their disconnect is a result of their kids logging inordinate amounts of time on their phones during traditional “family time” in the evening.

Peanut butter is a dominating flavor. Some strange combinations—peanut butter and fries, for example—work because all you can taste is peanut butter. For other pairings—like the peanut butter, egg, cheese, and bacon—the peanut butter is sweet enough to be inoffensive. For these types of combinations, we'd rather just eat plain peanut butter or keep the original concept as is.

We found that the peanut butter did its best work when coupled with sharp, acidic, and bitter ingredients like kimchi, sour pickles, and raw onion. These work with the peanut butter to create something new and exciting.

Vango was barking and poking the staffer and really wanted his attention. The staffer became suspicious when the couple didn’t seem to know basic information about the dog. Then the staffer realized he’d seen Vango before — and had even trained him as a puppy. While the barking and poking was going on another employee went to check social media for reports of stolen pets, and quickly pulled up a picture of Vango. The dog had been reported missing from his home just two and a half hours earlier.… The couple claimed they’d found the dog in the woods. The woman told the employee she wanted to keep the dog as a support animal because she had poor health and couldn’t afford to buy and train a dog. Surrounded by witnesses in the store, the employee convinced the couple to surrender the animal. Then he called Vango’s rightful owner. She’s filed a police complaint because she wants the couple to understand the impact of their actions.

- Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day

- How to add a new habit! Developing a new habit — or changing a bad one — takes a lot of work and patience. So instead of starting a new habit out of the blue, stack it on top of another habit you already have. Stanford University Behavior Scientist BJ Fogg suggests, for example, doing push-ups every time you use the restroom. He started just by doing one push-up every time he went, but over time he now does eight push-ups every time. Once you’ve stacked one habit, why not stack another? After you do push-ups — or whatever your version is — stack on having a glass of water.

- “earth sandwich” An Auckland university student has created an “earth sandwich” with a stranger in Spain, after a long search for an accomplice. Etienne Naude placed a slice of white bread on the ground at Bucklands Beach in Auckland, New Zealand, using longitude and latitude to ensure he was precisely opposite a volunteer he had found in the south of Spain after posting for help on Reddit. The two men — total strangers — had 7,906 miles of earth between them, creating an “earth sandwich.” Naude said making an earth sandwich was a long-term goal of his, but he’d struggled to find someone on the other side of the world who was willing to lend a hand, and a slice of bread.

- Not so happy about that claim on cows! Ben & Jerry’s will no longer say that their famous ice cream comes from “happy cows.” The company was being sued by the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) and the environmental advocate James Ehlers. Both claim in their respective lawsuits that the Vermont-based ice cream company is mischaracterizing their environmental and animal welfare practices, as well as using deceptive labeling to mislead consumers into thinking their dairy products come solely from “happy cows.”

Arriving as an unmarked tube, your crush will be clueless as to what’s inside.

Vacationers looking to escape winter weather by taking a trip to Florida are in for some bad news: cold weather is forcing some of the state’s water parks to shut down. Universal Studios tweeted that its Volcano Bay water park is closed through Wednesday due to the unusual wave of cold weather slated to hit… Disney World’s website states that Blizzard Beach Water Park is closed through Wednesday.

- Squirrel Appreciation Day

- Paw preference a problem for squirrels! Scientists have discovered that squirrels follow humans in being left and right-handed. But although some favor one side of the body over the other, it’s not to make their brains more efficient — as is believed to be the case in people. Squirrels who showed a paw preference in experiments were not as good at learning fresh tasks as their ambidextrous counterparts. The lead researcher (at University of Exeter) said: “We found that the squirrels who had stronger tendencies to use either their left or their right paws rather than being ambidextrous were the ones who didn’t perform as well on the tasks. So they didn’t learn as quickly.”

- Hard work? An annual survey (Edelman Trust Barometer) has found many people no longer believe working hard will give them a better life. Despite a strong economy and low unemployment, a majority of respondents in every developed market do not believe they will be better off in five years’ time… The results are universal around most of the world, though optimism for working hard/better life continues in Asia and the Middle East.

- More pain if you’re a cigarette smoker. New research (University College London) shows former and current cigarette smokers live in more pain compared to those who have never picked up the habit. While the exact reason is unknown, researchers pointed to the fact that chemicals in cigarettes can cause permanent damage to body tissue, resulting in pain.

- International Sweatpants Day

- An ad of apology. A guy in South Korea has taken out a newspaper ad to apologize to anyone and everyone he may have offended during a drunken stupor. The man says he can’t remember exactly what happened during his ten hour drinking binge, but his credit card bill was enough to pay for a car.

- Trapped in a shed… by a moose! An Alaska family’s home surveillance camera recorded video of a moose trapping a man inside the family shed. Curtis Phelps was just trying to take the garbage out, when he got trapped inside the shed by a moose who managed to push his way inside with one antler. The moose eventually moved on and Phelps escaped after calling his wife with his cellphone.

- Martin Luther King Jr. Day - 1986: The United States observed the first federal holiday in honor of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

- MONDAY IS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.’S BIRTHDAY (OBSERVED) _ Since 1986, the third Monday in January has been a federal holiday in observance of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and civil rights leader dedicated to nonviolence. Dr. King is the only American besides George Washington to have his birthday designated a national holiday.

- Drink Tea! Depression is common among older adults, with 7% of those over the age of 60 years reporting “major depressive disorder.” Research is underway to identify possible causes, but here’s some good news: there is a statistically significant link between regular tea drinking and lower levels of depression in seniors.

- Don’t Make your bed! Failing to make your bed in the morning may actually help keep you healthy, scientists believe. Research suggests that while an unmade bed may look scruffy it is also unappealing to house dust mites thought to cause asthma and other allergies. A (Kingston University) study discovered the bugs cannot survive in the warm, dry conditions found in an unmade bed.

- You can again say “I love you” with a candy heart! Sweethearts, the conversation heart candy, is back on shelves for Valentine’s day after missing a year because of a change in its ownership. But consumers might notice a few changes, fewer pithy sayings and a slightly different taste… Sweethearts’ original producer, New England confectionery company, went out of business in 2018. Sweethearts was sold to Spangler Candy, which moved production and then ran into production problems, including the need for a new printer for those little sayings. That means more of the conversation hearts will be ‘silent’ this year. But Spangler is bringing the candy back to its roots by reviving the original recipe, including flavors like banana and wintergreen.

- Today's 'Blue Monday' depression peak isn't real. The third Monday in January became a black day in 2005 when Cliff Arnall was paid by a public relations firm to identify the most miserable date on the calendar in order to promote a vacation company. The psychologist and self-styled ‘freelance happiness guru’ chose the date based on a pseudo-mathematical formula involving the weather, debt, motivational levels and time elapsed since Christmas… Arnall has since admitted the idea of a single most depressing day was “not particularly helpful” because it became “a self-fulfilling prophecy” and that achieving happiness and being less materialistic was a year-round aim. He said the third Monday in January should instead be used to “get a bit of perspective” about our own lives.

- Instagram may not be making your teen depressed! Social media use is at nearly 100% among today’s teens, which has led many experts to wonder if the resulting screen addiction is leading to a spike in depression and other mental health problems. Well, a new research study suggests that such fears may be overblown… A study in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry combed through around 40 studies that have examined this link between social media use and depression and anxiety in teens. Its conclusion: that link has not been well-established in academic studies… This is in line with an August study that tracked young adolescents to test whether more time spent using digital tech was linked to worse mental health outcomes and found “found little evidence of longitudinal or daily linkages.”

- With just the wave of a hand, Amazon is reportedly aiming to speed up checkout at Whole Foods stores. Amazon is testing a new system that lets customers pay for items by waving their hands in front of a scanner. The concept is different from the fingerprint scanners found in smartphones and doesn’t require customers to actually touch anything… Amazon is currently testing the project in vending machines at its New York offices, where the company has installed hand scanners. The plan is to roll out the hand scanners at Whole Foods stores in 2021.

- 1929: Popeye debuted in a comic strip called Thimble Theatre.

- Protein vs. working out? Given the option, would you avoid the gym altogether and simply pop a pill or drink a supplement that brings about the same benefits as a workout? It sounds far-fetched, but the idea of lounging around all day yet still enjoying the health benefits of an intense workout may one day be possible. University of Michigan researchers say that the naturally occurring protein Sestrin appears to mimic the effects of exercise on both flies and mice… These findings could have far reaching implications across the fitness, medical, and scientific fields. For instance, Sestrin could conceivably help individuals unable to work out due to old age or health problems maintain their muscles.

- Movies equals exercise? A new study (University College London) claims that sitting in the theater watching a film can count as exercise. Specifically, it would count as a “light form of cardio.”… Watching an emotional scene from a film not only increases your heart rate but also improves your brain health and your ability to concentrate. However, the study points out that watching movies in theaters is a more effective form of exercise than at home on the couch because you’re less distracted and can invest more emotionally in the movie.

- Clean your coffee maker! Your coffee machine could be one of the dirtiest parts of your kitchen if not cleaned often. Bacteria, yeast, and mold could be growing in your machine because of irregular cleaning, and those little devils don’t discriminate — it doesn’t matter whether you have a coffee pot, a Keurig, or a fancy espresso machine… Researchers say the part of the machine that stores water is the biggest culprit of disgustingness: half of the coffee reservoirs tested contained mold and yeast. The intense heat from the machine will kill some of the bacteria, but it’s not saving you from all of it.

- Bootleggers Day

- Be happy… You’ve sent mail! Want a simple way to be happier? According to the book The Happiness Advantage, every morning send a friend, family member, or co-worker an email to say thanks for something. There’s tons of research showing that over time, this alone — one little email a day — can make you happier.

- Moms are stressed? The most stressful time of the day for moms is exactly 8:25 AM. Getting kids out of bed, dressed, eating their breakfast and packing school bags was found to leave moms frazzled before they even leave the house. But it is at exactly 8:25 AM — as they try to get to school on time — that stress levels reach their peak.

- Hang in there… we’re about a third of the way through winter.

- This year’s annual snowball fight on the campus of the University of British Columbia was postponed because of snow. - Bacon Burglar. A burglar made himself at home in a German house. Police say the man was so comfortable in somebody else’s home that he fried himself up some bacon before taking a nap in an owner’s bed. The homeowner told police he realized something was wrong when he came home to find music playing and the smell of bacon.

- American’s spend $$ on home entertainment. Americans spent $25.2 billion on home entertainment in 2019, a record level that rose 8.4 percent compared to the previous year. Streaming subscriptions accounted for the largest slice of that pie, encompassing $15.9 billion of that spending for a total of 63 percent of the entire market… Digital movie sales were up 5 percent, and digital movie rentals were up 9 percent… Disc sales — Blu-rays, DVDs, etc. — are in a serious slide, down 18.2 percent. Video rental stores made just $250 million in 2019, down 21.1 percent from 2018.

- Be the slow air traveler. A new study found that planes boarded 28 percent more efficiently when slower passengers were boarded ahead of faster passengers. The current optimal way is passengers board in a series of waves along the entire fuselage of the plane — called the Steffen Method… The new study finds that letting slower passengers load first and then sending in faster passengers expedited the whole process, giving slower passengers time to load in.

Bonus News (not mentioned on-air):
An unnamed Oklahoma woman is being mocked on social media after one of her co-workers shared a poorly edited photo of a flat tire that she had allegedly used to justify being late for work. Twitter user Sydney Whitson posted the photo that her colleague allegedly sent her boss last week. A close look at the photo reveals there’s something not quite right about the nail. It looks very cartoonish, and the tire it seems to be stuck into appears heavily edited as well. Unfortunately for the anonymous woman, her boss was quick to notice too, and apparently shared the photo with the rest of the workplace… Whitson tweeted with the photo: “My co-worker called in (yet again) and said she had a nail on her tire that caused her to have a flat. - The mid-life crisis is real. An academic study led by an economist (Dartmouth College) has pinpointed the precise age we hit a midlife crisis: 47.2 years old. Professor David Blanchflower studied data across 132 countries to measure the relationship between wellbeing and age… He concluded that in every country there is a “happiness curve” which is U-shaped over lifetimes. It 48.2 years in developing nations and 47.2 years in advanced countries.

He said his biggest safety concern at the top of the pole is lightning. Kruger said a bolt of lightning narrowly missed his pole only a few days into his attempt.

According to a survey, 19 percent of adults have lied about working out — and 37 percent admit doing so in order to convince someone else they were busy… 35 percent lie about going to the gym to impress someone.

- It’s Dress Up Your Pet Day and 15 percent of pet owners say they dress up their pets at least weekly.

- Do you when the tax deadline is? According to new research, less than a third of Americans know when taxes are due this year. The survey found 27 percent of Americans were able to correctly identify April 15 as the official day taxes are due… When the refund comes, 44 percent plan to pay off their credit card bills while 36 percent want to make their money grow by investing it.

- Taking a ride on an electric scooter soon? Wear your helmet. According to a recent study, not wearing headgear or taking other precautions while riding is increasingly sending young people to the hospital — leading to more than 40,000 broken bones, head wounds and other injuries. Unfortunately, less than 5% of riders in the study were found to be wearing their helmet, leading to nearly one-third of patients having a head injury. That’s more than double the rate of head injuries experienced by bicyclists.

- Organize Your Home Day

- Queen Elizabeth said on Monday that she would allow Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, to make a transition to being part-time royals, splitting their time between Britain and Canada and supporting themselves. He has modified a remote-controlled toy truck so it can carry small packages across a frozen river, delivering products such as medicines to the many elderly residents of a village on the opposite bank. The courier said the local village is surrounded by mountains and hard to get to when the river is frozen, so he had to come up with a solution to deliver the urgently needed packages. Because of the open area of the frozen river, the little truck’s remote control has greater range.

- No really, you can’t make up sleep _ If you think staying in bed on the weekends will make up for a weeks’ worth of sleep deprivation, think again. A new study finds that going long periods without sleep can lead to a sort of “sleep debt” that cannot simply be undone with a little extra snoozing from time to time. Such chronic sleep loss may eventually interfere with a person’s performance on tasks that require focus, becoming particularly noticeable at nighttime when the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle isn’t giving you an extra boost… Anyone who’s ever pulled an all-nighter knows how debilitating sleep loss can be in the short term. Studies show that after 24 hours without sleep, a person’s performance can drop to the level of someone who is legally drunk.

Aidan’s parents then rushed upstairs to find their son “extremely disorientated”.

- Planes and helicopters are being used to feed the thousands of hungry wildlife stranded amid the Australian wildfire crisis. The New South Wales government has started doing food-drops, delivery thousands of pounds of carrots and sweet potato from above to feed the state’s colonies of brush-trailed rock wallabies. The wallabies typically survive the fire itself, but are then left stranded with limited natural food as the fire takes out the vegetation around their rocky habitat.

Now, a fascinating new study (Tilburg University) has identified a way for television’s influence over children to be used in a positive fashion. - A guy in China was trying to smuggle iPhones into his country. To do this he created a plastic suit that held 94 iPhones. He then strapped them around his arms, legs, hips, and torso and put regular clothes over the plastic suit. But there’s a problem when you’re wearing 94 iPhones: you have to walk around, pretending that everything is fine even though you’re moving like a robot. And that is how the man was caught: officials noticed his weird walk and inability to move his major joints normally. That’s when they discovered his secret suit of iPhone armor.

Fun Fact:In your life you will go through 20 gallons of toothpaste. #funfact

Bonus News (not mentioned on-air):Here’s a simple way to have a happier marriage: touch while sleeping. In a study (University of Herfordshire), 94 percent of couples who touched while sleeping said they were happier. For couples who are hands-off (and arms and legs and toes), only 68 percent are happy… The strongest warm, fuzzy feelings came from couples who slept less than an inch apart. More than 30 inches spelled bad news!

Rodgers argued that young people are too immature to use cellphones, citing the role the devices play in fatal car crashes… But even Rodgers said he may not vote for the legislation, adding that he just wanted to make a point: “I have no delusions that it’s going to pass.
