In The News:

- Hugging Day & Hug Your Puppy Day

- Glitter bomb your valentine? There’s nothing that says “I love you” more than a face full of heart-shaped glitter on Valentine’s Day. A company called Pranks Anonymous now offers a glitter bomb, which consists of heart-shaped glitter flying everywhere and creating a mess of sparkles. Arriving as an unmarked tube, your crush will be clueless as to what’s inside.

- Delete those apps? Just how much old information is sitting in your smartphone? A survey finds 52 percent of us have never deleted files, apps, or anything else from any of our devices. Another 33% said they have files on their phones or other devices that are ten or more years old.

- Will you be my neighbor… or not? A survey reveals that five out of ten homeowners have had problems with their neighbors.

- Too cold for Florida water parks! January is no time for splishing and splashing, even in the Sunshine State. Vacationers looking to escape winter weather by taking a trip to Florida are in for some bad news: cold weather is forcing some of the state’s water parks to shut down. Universal Studios tweeted that its Volcano Bay water park is closed through Wednesday due to the unusual wave of cold weather slated to hit… Disney World’s website states that Blizzard Beach Water Park is closed through Wednesday.

- Squirrel Appreciation Day

- Paw preference a problem for squirrels! Scientists have discovered that squirrels follow humans in being left and right-handed. But although some favor one side of the body over the other, it’s not to make their brains more efficient — as is believed to be the case in people. Squirrels who showed a paw preference in experiments were not as good at learning fresh tasks as their ambidextrous counterparts. The lead researcher (at University of Exeter) said: “We found that the squirrels who had stronger tendencies to use either their left or their right paws rather than being ambidextrous were the ones who didn’t perform as well on the tasks. So they didn’t learn as quickly.”

- Hard work? An annual survey (Edelman Trust Barometer) has found many people no longer believe working hard will give them a better life. Despite a strong economy and low unemployment, a majority of respondents in every developed market do not believe they will be better off in five years’ time… The results are universal around most of the world, though optimism for working hard/better life continues in Asia and the Middle East.

- More pain if you’re a cigarette smoker. New research (University College London) shows former and current cigarette smokers live in more pain compared to those who have never picked up the habit. While the exact reason is unknown, researchers pointed to the fact that chemicals in cigarettes can cause permanent damage to body tissue, resulting in pain.

- International Sweatpants Day

- An ad of apology. A guy in South Korea has taken out a newspaper ad to apologize to anyone and everyone he may have offended during a drunken stupor. The man says he can’t remember exactly what happened during his ten hour drinking binge, but his credit card bill was enough to pay for a car.

- Trapped in a shed… by a moose! An Alaska family’s home surveillance camera recorded video of a moose trapping a man inside the family shed. Curtis Phelps was just trying to take the garbage out, when he got trapped inside the shed by a moose who managed to push his way inside with one antler. The moose eventually moved on and Phelps escaped after calling his wife with his cellphone.
