- Adulting class turns students away. Now in its second year, a UC Berkeley basic life skills class has become so popular that it’s had to turn 200 wannabe adults away. The eight-week pass/no pass course teaches young people how to be more responsible and grown-up, ie. how to “adult.” They learn how to budget for food, do taxes, manage relationships, and more. Other areas include fitness, nutrition and mental health.
- Dirty Kitchen appliance handles. Ask anyone what the grossest spots in their home are and they’ll likely answer with one of the following: the toilet, the dish sponge, or the grimy stovetop. But according to a new study, your appliance handles could be even more disgusting… Researchers studied the amount of bacteria on 14 common sites in your home and found that the kitchen was the most contaminated spot. And appliance handles — like that of your oven door — were some of the worst offenders.
- Hand sanitizers safe? Think hand sanitizers will keep you safe from the flu this winter? Think again. The FDA says they don't, and is warning the makers of Purell to stop making such claims. In a letter sent to the company this month, the FDA says it is "not aware of any adequate and well-controlled studies" that prove that hand sanitizers prevent infection from viruses like flu, ebola, MRSA, or norovirus. It also criticized the company for claiming on its website that Purell products reduce "student absenteeism" by 51%. Purell's parent company GOJO says it's taking "immediate action" and is already updating its website.
- We like Super Bowl ads better. In a study, a slight majority of respondents, 51 percent, said they like the commercials played during the Super Bowl more than the game itself.
- Cornchip Day
- Fined for sneezing. A man in England was fined for blowing his nose while his van was stopped. The guy wiped his nose with a handkerchief while stuck in traffic. But when the traffic cleared, he was pulled over by police who told him he had not been in control of his vehicle. He was fined $97.
- stolen backpack of jewelry. A backpack containing $500,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from a Philadelphia hotel (Sofitel Hotel) Monday morning. Police have not identified the backpack’s owner. Who carries $500,000 worth of jewelry around in a backpack?
- Seeing Eye Dog Day
- police Dolly Parton Challenge. A few police departments in the UK have used the viral Dolly Parton Challenge to ask for the public's help in finding some burglars. In case you didn't know, the challenge that was started by a Parton social media post asked people to reveal pictures they would list on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Tinder. Several police departments started posting suspect's photos so that people could get a good look at who is being accused of a crime. People who saw the posts congratulated the police departments for being creative.
- K9 rescues lost wedding ring. In Britain, an officer was on patrol with his sniffer dog, Odin, when he spotted two men with a flashlight acting suspiciously at the side of the road at 2AM Saturday. The officer approached the men, who told him one of them had thrown his wedding ring to the side of the road during an argument with his wife and they had been searching for it for some time... Because Odin was trained to sniff human scent, he was able to sniff out the ring in some tall grass in about two minutes.
