In The News:
- Popeye Day

- 1929: Popeye debuted in a comic strip called Thimble Theatre.

- Protein vs. working out? Given the option, would you avoid the gym altogether and simply pop a pill or drink a supplement that brings about the same benefits as a workout? It sounds far-fetched, but the idea of lounging around all day yet still enjoying the health benefits of an intense workout may one day be possible. University of Michigan researchers say that the naturally occurring protein Sestrin appears to mimic the effects of exercise on both flies and mice… These findings could have far reaching implications across the fitness, medical, and scientific fields. For instance, Sestrin could conceivably help individuals unable to work out due to old age or health problems maintain their muscles.

- Movies equals exercise? A new study (University College London) claims that sitting in the theater watching a film can count as exercise. Specifically, it would count as a “light form of cardio.”… Watching an emotional scene from a film not only increases your heart rate but also improves your brain health and your ability to concentrate. However, the study points out that watching movies in theaters is a more effective form of exercise than at home on the couch because you’re less distracted and can invest more emotionally in the movie.

- Clean your coffee maker! Your coffee machine could be one of the dirtiest parts of your kitchen if not cleaned often. Bacteria, yeast, and mold could be growing in your machine because of irregular cleaning, and those little devils don’t discriminate — it doesn’t matter whether you have a coffee pot, a Keurig, or a fancy espresso machine… Researchers say the part of the machine that stores water is the biggest culprit of disgustingness: half of the coffee reservoirs tested contained mold and yeast. The intense heat from the machine will kill some of the bacteria, but it’s not saving you from all of it.

- Bootleggers Day

- Be happy… You’ve sent mail! Want a simple way to be happier? According to the book The Happiness Advantage, every morning send a friend, family member, or co-worker an email to say thanks for something. There’s tons of research showing that over time, this alone — one little email a day — can make you happier.

- Moms are stressed? The most stressful time of the day for moms is exactly 8:25 AM. Getting kids out of bed, dressed, eating their breakfast and packing school bags was found to leave moms frazzled before they even leave the house. But it is at exactly 8:25 AM — as they try to get to school on time — that stress levels reach their peak.

- Hang in there… we’re about a third of the way through winter.

- This year’s annual snowball fight on the campus of the University of British Columbia was postponed because of snow. Wednesday’s event was pushed to Thursday after heavy snow in Vancouver led to widespread commuter chaos and the cancellation of classes… Last year, an estimated 3,000 lined up on either side of battleground for the “serious snowy showdown.”

- Bacon Burglar. A burglar made himself at home in a German house. Police say the man was so comfortable in somebody else’s home that he fried himself up some bacon before taking a nap in an owner’s bed. The homeowner told police he realized something was wrong when he came home to find music playing and the smell of bacon.

- American’s spend $$ on home entertainment. Americans spent $25.2 billion on home entertainment in 2019, a record level that rose 8.4 percent compared to the previous year. Streaming subscriptions accounted for the largest slice of that pie, encompassing $15.9 billion of that spending for a total of 63 percent of the entire market… Digital movie sales were up 5 percent, and digital movie rentals were up 9 percent… Disc sales — Blu-rays, DVDs, etc. — are in a serious slide, down 18.2 percent. Video rental stores made just $250 million in 2019, down 21.1 percent from 2018.

- Be the slow air traveler. A new study found that planes boarded 28 percent more efficiently when slower passengers were boarded ahead of faster passengers. The current optimal way is passengers board in a series of waves along the entire fuselage of the plane — called the Steffen Method… The new study finds that letting slower passengers load first and then sending in faster passengers expedited the whole process, giving slower passengers time to load in.
