- Handwriting Day
- Cheesy bookmark. The University of Liverpool Library tweeted photographic evidence of a new crime against books. “This is not a bookmark,” the account declared, and posted a cursed photo of a discolored, oily, old slice of cheese that’s still wrapped in plastic. The social media manager for the University of Liverpool’s library went on to joke that when talking to a pest control man about mice in the library they claimed to have no idea why the little critters were sniffing around the books. This was before a literal slice of cheese was found in a library book.
- RIP Mr. Peanut. On Wednesday, Planters announced that their 104-year-old “spokesnut” Mr. Peanut will no longer represent the brand following the mascot’s sudden passing. The @MrPeanut twitter account wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that we confirm that Mr. Peanut has died at 104. In the ultimate selfless act, he sacrificed himself to save his friends when they needed him most. Please pay your respects with #RIPeanut.” A spokesperson for Heinz, owner of the Planters brand, teased that the stunt has something to do with Super Bowl 54: “We encourage fans to tune in to Mr. Peanut’s funeral during the third quarter of the Super Bowl to celebrate his life.”
- Karate Kid the Musical. Broadway may have something with a little kick to it…. And become the next battleground between underdog Daniel LaRusso and local bully Johnny Lawrence. The beloved ’80s classic The Karate Kid is being developed into a stage musical. It’s guaranteed to become a Hit
- foot massager fail. In Hong Kong, a woman who tried out a foot massager in a store had to be rescued by firefighters when her foot got stuck in it and the staff couldn’t get her out. After being stuck for 30 minutes, the woman was checked out at a local hospital and released.
- Rhubarb Pie Day
- Frozen bird. It’s so cold in Canada, birds are freezing to the ground. When Sandy Doucette was driving near his home on a snowy winter road in Canada the other day, he noticed something odd. A group of birds were on the road and they flew away as he drove by them — except one. So Doucette stopped his car and took a closer look at the bird that was left. The bird didn’t budge as he walked closer, and then Doucette discovered why: its feet were completely encased in at least an inch of frozen ice and snow. Using his bare hands to brush away and melt the ice, Doucette helped the bird go free.
- Phones in cabs. In a survey of drivers of cabs, Ubers, Lyfts and related vehicles, phones are the No. 1 thing we leave behind. But in 2019, according to a survey of drivers, people also left behind lots of computers, quite a few pieces of luggage, artificial limbs, various articles of clothing (hats, gloves), and tons of umbrellas. People also left behind musical instruments and dentures.
- Dog reports it’s own dognapping. A five-month-old Australian shepherd named Vango had a paw in his own rescue when he alerted staff at a Quebec (Gatineau) pet store to his suspected dognapping. According to a staff member and dog trainer at the pet store, Vango entered the store with a couple that normally came in to buy cat food. Vango was barking and poking the staffer and really wanted his attention. The staffer became suspicious when the couple didn’t seem to know basic information about the dog. Then the staffer realized he’d seen Vango before — and had even trained him as a puppy. While the barking and poking was going on another employee went to check social media for reports of stolen pets, and quickly pulled up a picture of Vango. The dog had been reported missing from his home just two and a half hours earlier.… The couple claimed they’d found the dog in the woods. The woman told the employee she wanted to keep the dog as a support animal because she had poor health and couldn’t afford to buy and train a dog. Surrounded by witnesses in the store, the employee convinced the couple to surrender the animal. Then he called Vango’s rightful owner. She’s filed a police complaint because she wants the couple to understand the impact of their actions.
- Deputy injured after K-9 bites cow when tased! A deputy in Georgetown County was forced to use a taser on his own K-9 on Wednesday afternoon. According to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy responded to the scene of a reported burglary around 4:00 p.m. A cow near the scene distracted the dog which led to the dog biting the cow. To deescalate the situation, the deputy tased the dog. The cow was spooked and “struck the deputy and the property owner,” resulting in minor injuries, according to GCSO. The sheriff’s office said that the burglary call “proved to be unfounded.”
