In The News:
- Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day
- Instagram survey shows every state’s least favorite state _ Florida’s least favorite state happens to be Florida, and New Jersey’s least favorite state is every other state. Those were the findings of Matt Shirley, who polled his 323,000 Instagram followers as part of a survey to find out which states hate which states the most.
- Is it OK to eat snow? Anne Nolin, a professor at University of Nevada, Reno says: “Everyone should eat snow because it’s really fun.” Nolin, who studies snow and ice in the climate system, says most snow is just as clean as any drinking water. To make their way from a cloud to the ground, cold water molecules have to cling to particles of dust or pollen to form the ice crystals that then grow into snowflakes in a process called deposition. These, Nolin points out, are the same tiny particles we normally breathe. Plus, as snowflakes fall, they have a harder time picking up soot and other air pollutants than raindrops, which are better at picking up these particulates… Once the snow is on the ground, it stays clean until other things land on top of it. So if you’re planning to eat snow, eat it fresh.
- We’ve been following Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo’s adorable and widely beloved hippopotamus, for years now. Well, she just turned 3 a few days ago, and of course this was cause for celebration. There was cake, naturally. But since loads of chocolate are not good for most animals, Fiona’s cake featured an assortment of fruits and veggies. So, yeah, she got a big fruit cake on her birthday.
- Holocaust Memorial Day & Auschwitz Liberation Day (Ow-shvitz)
- Today (January 27) marks the 75th anniversary of the Soviet Army’s liberation of Auschwitz, the largest and deadliest Nazi concentration complex. First established in 1940 in German-occupied Poland, Auschwitz had a concentration camp, a labor camp, large gas chambers, and crematoria. More than 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, including nearly one million Jews. On the day of liberation, only 7,000 were saved.
- A man in Alberta, Canada, rescued three kittens that were frozen into the ice. Kendall Diwisch says he was doing the rounds near one of his wells when he discovered the helpless kittens. He said, “Poor things were frozen into the ice so they had to have been there all night.” He threw some lukewarm coffee on their frozen tails, tugged a little bit, and “they came out pretty good.” Diwisch took the three shivering cats home and gave them food, water, and a dewormer. It didn’t take long to find them a forever home. A family who lost their cat last fall have taken in all three.
- Chocolate Cake Day
- The concept of a close-knit family is quickly becoming outdated. A recent survey of 1,000 parents found that the average parent spends a mere five hours per week communicating face-to-face with their children. More than half of surveyed moms and dads with children under the age of 18 said they feel “distant” from their kids. In all, 43% blamed their measly family time on their kids spending too much time in front of the television, with another 51% saying their kids spend too much time in their bedrooms. Another 44% said their disconnect is a result of their kids logging inordinate amounts of time on their phones during traditional “family time” in the evening.
- Baby boards a bus. Police in China reunited a one-year-old toddler with his parents after the little boy got onto a bus on his own. The bus driver and passengers could not believe their eyes when the bus doors opened and the baby climbed aboard. The bus driver pulled over the bus and called police for help. Officers asked around the neighborhood and managed to find the baby boy’s parents an hour later.
- Coffin surprise. A Polish funeral director said he opened the coffin of a 76-year-old man to retrieve items for the bereaved family only to discover the man was still alive. Just days earlier, when the man had collapsed near his barn, he was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor. After being found alive in the coffin the man was rushed to intensive care and recovered.
