In The News:
- Houseplant Appreciation Day & Peculiar People Day
- On this day in 1949: The Radio Corporation of America, sometimes known as RCA, announced a new 7-inch, 45 rpm phonograph record. Soon, the 45 would change the music business.
- The maker of the disc-shaped Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner said it’s working on a household helper that will have arms that could load dishes, pick up clothes, or bring food from kitchen to table. They won’t start selling such a product for at least five years but prototypes of the arms exist inside its research and development labs.
- A Vermont lawmaker has introduced a new bill that would ban the use of cellphones by anyone under the age of 21. State Sen. John Rodgers’ proposal would punish anyone under the age threshold found with a cellphone with up to one year in prison, a $1,000 fine or both. Rodgers argued that young people are too immature to use cellphones, citing the role the devices play in fatal car crashes… But even Rodgers said he may not vote for the legislation, adding that he just wanted to make a point: “I have no delusions that it’s going to pass. I wouldn’t probably vote for it myself.”
- Now you have an excuse to leave your artificial Christmas tree up. According to Google Trends, searches for ‘valentine trees’ are up 88 percent over the last few years, and a quick scroll through Instagram confirms that people are actually putting up pink and red Valentine’s Day trees.
- Tea is often overshadowed by its perkier counterpart coffee, but it has been proven to hold a number of health benefits such as soothing digestion, boosting the immune system, and providing helpful antioxidants. Perhaps, then, it shouldn’t come as a shock that a new study (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences) finds that drinking tea at least three times per week is associated with a longer and healthier life… 100,092 people with no history of heart attack, stroke, or cancer were included in the study. All of these participants were separated into two groups: habitual tea drinkers (at least three times per week) and never or non-habitual tea drinkers (less than three times per week). Each participating adult was tracked for a median time period of 7.3 years.
- One man has just raised the bar on marriage proposals: he edited his girlfriend and himself into her favorite movie, Sleeping Beauty. In a video shared on YouTube, Lee Lochler, the man who proposed, is seen sitting in a theater watching the Disney classic. When Prince Phillip leans over to kiss Princess Aurora, she morphs into a beautiful, brown princess who strikingly resembles Lochler’s girlfriend. The prince is also edited to look like Lochler. The prince then presents a ring and proceeds to toss it over to the real-life Lochler. Lochler catches it and begins his proposal.
- Parents commit almost 4,000 “parenting mishaps” before their child moves out of the house, according to new research. A survey of parents found the average parent commits 221 little hiccups per year — adding up to 3,978 between their child’s birth and age 18… The top parenting faux pas was allowing children to have too much screen time (65 percent), followed by accidentally teaching children swear words (42 percent) and letting children watch something that wasn’t age-appropriate (39 percent).
- Need another reason to look forward to retirement? You may sleep better. That’s the conclusion of a study of French retirees. Though older people are often thought to have more difficulty sleeping, the study found “strong evidence for a substantial and sustained decrease in sleep disturbances following retirement.” The exception was retirees with health issues that interfered with their sleep.
- A grandmother in the UK got into a sticky situation when she confused her eye drops with superglue. The 78-year-old was rushed to a hospital after reaching for the medicated drops in her fridge and getting the super-strength glue instead. Nurses then used vegetable oil to try to remove the glue, which had fused the woman’s eyelashes together and seeped under the lids. They soaked her eyes for around five minutes and then tried to pry the lashes apart. Eventually she was able to open them.
Fun Fact:
Over 3 million trees are used to create IRS forms each year…. #funfact
Bonus News (not mentioned on-air):
- Police are searching for a man in Philadelphia who allegedly committed an extreme act of desperation late last week. The unidentified man walked into a Rite Aid store shortly before noon and handed the cashier a note. In it, he not only asked for the money in the register, but also apologized, claiming that he was only committing the robbery for the sake of his sick child. The note read: “Give me all the money. I’m sorry, I have a sick child. You have 15 seconds.” The cashier complied with his request, putting all the money in a plastic bag that he gave her. Then, the man simply left.
- A Florida woman was arrested on charges of retail theft. The woman was seen concealing merchandise in a bag and leaving a Walmart without paying. The woman had five cans of spray paint, a box of Playtex, a bra, and a jar of olives.
