- A study finds it takes at least three days to get back to normal after a vacation. Research revealed those who take a week off take around 72 hours to get back into the swings of things once again. That time increases to four days for a two-week break ... The study also found it takes two nights for our sleeping pattern to get back to normal while battling jet lag and getting over late nights and sleeping in.

- The fight to save the seas from plastic waste may mean the end for mini bottles of shampoo and other toiletries that hotel guests love to stuff into their luggage. The owner of Holiday Inn and InterContinental Hotels said Tuesday that its nearly 843,000 guest rooms are switching to bulk-size bathroom amenities as part of an effort to cut waste. The transition is due to be completed in 2021. InterContinental Hotels Group uses an average of 200 million bathroom mini bottles every year.

- Anyone considering an expensive purchase might drink a bottle of water first — scientists have concluded that people with full bladders make wiser decisions. Researchers discovered the brain’s self-control mechanism provides restraint in all areas at once. They found people with a full bladder were able to better control and “hold off” making important, or expensive, decisions, leading to better judgement. Psychologists (University of Twente in the Netherlands) linked bladder control to the same part of the brain that activates feelings of desire and reward.

- While the American Dental Association advises us to replace our toothbrushes at least every three to four months, you might want to do it more often. Researchers have found that the dirtiest item in your medicine cabinet is most likely your toothbrush. They found that streptococcus, staphylococcus, influenza, and herpes simplex I, among other pathogens, can easily survive on toothbrushes. And then you put it in your mouth. One researcher says the best place to store your toothbrush is out of the medicine cabinet and even out of the bathroom.

- Strapping on a FitBit and tracking your steps may not actually be doing all that much to help you lose weight. Researchers at the University of Florida found that wearable fitness devices like FitBit and Apple Watch may help a person’s wellbeing, but do not lead to any meaningful drop in cholesterol or blood pressure, and only one of six studies analyzed showed any weight loss at all… The findings were a surprise even to researchers, who thought they would find that the motivation to get moving and get more exercise would have shown some kind of weight loss. Lead author Ara Jo said that the wearable fitness tracking devices can help people stay away from a sedentary lifestyle that creates its own health risks, but does not motivate them to be active enough to actually lose weight.

- A dog owner in England discovered his dog had swallowed an $800 watch when the alarm went off inside the animal. The dog was taken to the vet but coughed the watch up before an operation became necessary.

Women, apparently, want a man that looks mysterious, and men want a friendly looking woman. What do we have in common? The color red. We’re both drawn to the color red.

- In an experiment (by OKCupid) to test if love really is blind, researchers temporarily removed user’s photos from their dating profiles to see how it would affect their interactions. Unsurprisingly, the site’s traffic went down significantly. However men and women who actually tried out a “blind” date reported having a good time regardless of how attractive their date was. Once the photos were restored the same people went back to relying on looks to dictate whether or not they responded to messages, concluding that “people are exactly as shallow as their technology allows them to be.”

- Frustrated by your spouse’s spending habits? It might be why you married them, according to researchers (at Wharton School of Finance and Northwestern University). Surveys of married adults suggest that opposites attract when it comes to emotional reactions toward spending… The researchers found that people who generally spend less than they would ideally like to spend, and those who spend more than they would like to, tend to marry each other. That’s even though most single people say they would be happiest marrying someone with similar spending habits to their own.

- If you need to remember something, ask a little kid. The typical 5-year-old can beat most adults on a recognition memory test, at least under certain conditions. Why? Adults know too much. And all that knowledge decreases our ability to remember correctly (according to a study from Ohio State University). This is why you never promise or likely suggest something to a toddler!

- Employees got to work one Sunday morning at a Fort Myers, Fla., car dealership and observed that a vehicle in the lot had incurred damage. Fortunately, Modern Auto Sales has surveillance equipment. So when they played the video the last thing they expected to see was somebody falling from the sky, landing on one of the cars. But that’s what they saw. The young man had apparently dropped 20 feet from the business’ roof. The dealership’s owner thinks the man got up there with the dealership’s own ladder. It’s not clear whether he jumped intentionally. The video shows him picking himself up and walking away after the fall. The incident happened in the rain, and police say that means there aren’t any fingerprints, but they are investigating.

- A man walked into a Connecticut bank and calmly handed the teller a note that read, “Count out $1,200. Hand it to me. You are being robbed. Stay calm.” The teller did as she was told. When the thief left, the teller turned to her manager and told him that one of their regular customers had just robbed the place. It turned out that the guy went to that bank pretty much every day, and all the employees knew him, so it wasn’t hard for the police to track him down.

- Police in the UK were sent to a home where someone had dialed the emergency number four times over a few minutes. After each call was answered the phone would go dead. When police got to the home they looked through a window and saw a broken lamp. Fearing the worst they smashed the door down to investigate. Once inside they found no sign of a burglary or injured person — just a cat playing with the phone.

New research has revealed that the average British woman misses out on three hours of sleep every night, as men blissfully doze away - which equates to roughly 1,095 hours lost each year. And said males are part of the reason why you're not getting enough shut eye, with a partner's snoring robbing many of their sleep, alongside other factors such as waking up to look after the kids.

- It’s not only students who are stressed about school: almost six in ten parents are so worried about their child that they’ve lost sleep in the back-to-school season. Earlier that day, someone reported that a woman, identified as Joann Childers, from Jennings County, stole her teeth and accused her of wearing them around. A probation officer who later met with Childers said she noticed she was wearing the set of pearly whites, which "may be the stolen teeth." On Wednesday, officials spoke to Childers about the alleged denture theft. The sheriff's office wrote on Facebook that while speaking with Childers, a deputy saw the dentures in "plain view" inside her home — and they were even reportedly labeled with the alleged victim's name on it.

- The National Weather Service in Nebraska demonstrated the effects of the brutal heat by trying to bake biscuits using nothing but a car and the sun. In a series of tweets on Thursday, the National Weather Service in Omaha and Valley posted updates on the biscuit experiment over the course of eight hours. The experiment was conducted as an excessive heat warning had been issued for much of eastern Nebraska through 7 p.m. on Saturday by the National Weather Service. The high in Omaha on Thursday was 92 degrees with a heat index of 103. The biscuit dough was placed on a cookie sheet inside an enclosed vehicle on Thursday morning along with a thermometer. The biscuits usually take about 14 to 17 minutes in 350-degree heat to bake. A tweet included a picture of the biscuits and included the caption, "45 minutes in. Biscuits are rising." About an hour after the initial tweet, they posted, "The pan has reached 175 degrees in 60 minutes and the tops of the biscuits are at 153." The last Tweet update said, "after nearly 8 hours in the sun, the outside of the biscuit is actually edible. The middle is still pretty doughy though. The max temp on the pan was 185!"
The take away: "This is a good time to remind everyone that your car does in fact get deadly hot. Look before you lock! On average, 38 children die in hot cars each year. Don't be a statistic!"

"If you do leave a bottle of water in your vehicle and the sun catches it just right, it could act like a magnifying glass," says Charlottesville firefighter Frank Scopelliti. "[It could] heat a specific spot and start a smoldering fire that could eventually become a real fire." Acknowledging that the idea might sound a little far-fetched, the Midwest City Fire Department in Oklahoma conducted an experiment, holding a water bottle in front of a piece of paper on a sunny day. Sure enough, the concentrated sunlight quickly burned a hole right through the paper.

- Knowing which seats on a plane are the most dangerous in a crash is a morbid, yet perhaps useful piece of information to have filed away somewhere in your brain. However, no one really wants an airline that they may travel on to tweet out such a fact out, basically saying, “Come fly with us! But just know, if you book one of these seats, your chances of survival go down considerably in a crash.”… This is a lesson Dutch airline KLM in India is learning this week after they tweeted as a part of their “Trivia Tuesday” program. The tweet read: “According to Time, the fatality rate for the seats in the middle of the plane is the highest. However, the fatality rate for the seats in the front is marginally lesser and is least for seats at the rear third of a plane.” …. Makes sense… I’ve never seen a plane back into a mountain.

- A study reveals the average person will spend more than two years of their life bored to tears. Experts found the typical adult will waste almost six hours a week feeling completely and utterly bored with life. The main reason for the boredom was “having no money.”

Once in his cab the cabbie locked the back doors and drove them to the police station.

This comes from an analysis of 16 public opinion polls totaling more than 30,000 U.S. adults from 1946 to 2018. In a 1946 poll, only 35% of those surveyed thought men and women were equally intelligent. In one 2018 poll, 86% believed they were equally intelligent. That’s not equal, but of those who believed intelligence was not equal, 9% believed women were more intelligent and only 5% believed men were more intelligent.

- What’s the deadliest driving season? Winter, right? Icy, snowy roads make it a no-brainer, right? Wrong. OK, spring then. Lots of rain and slick roads make it the worst season for driving, for sure. Nope. Research says fall is when driving is at its deadliest. Specifically, October has the year’s highest death rate per distance driven. In fact, the danger of dying in a crash is 16 percent greater in October than in wintry March — the safest month of the year… So what’s up? Well, researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Safety Institute say inclement weather also leads to general reductions in speed.

Managers in the middle often spend 12 hours a week wasting away in meetings. And the minions? Still about 6 hours. And those numbers just keep climbing. Unfortunately, as research proves, a painstaking meeting schedule has the worst effect on the employees who are the most motivated and productive. They start to feel stressed and bogged down.
