• The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.

• On the 4th of July, 1942, the U.S. air offensive against Nazi Germany began.

• The number of Americans who will spend the holiday at other people’s homes is approximately 41 million.

• The first official 4th of July party was held at the White House in 1801



• Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the 4th.

• The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.

• Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. All the others signed later.

• Americans spend $111 million on popsicles and charcoal for July 4th weekend.
