In The News:
- National Ice Cream Day

- on this day in 1969: Apollo 11 was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, and would become the first manned space mission to land on the moon.

- Two thirds of grown-ups admit they don’t always act their age. The survey found a large percentage confess to being ‘big kids at heart’, doing things like sliding down a slide at a park, building with LEGOS, climbing a tree, and playing mini golf.

- What’s the deadliest driving season? Winter, right? Icy, snowy roads make it a no-brainer, right? Wrong. OK, spring then. Lots of rain and slick roads make it the worst season for driving, for sure. Nope. Research says fall is when driving is at its deadliest. Specifically, October has the year’s highest death rate per distance driven. In fact, the danger of dying in a crash is 16 percent greater in October than in wintry March — the safest month of the year… So what’s up? Well, researchers at the University of Michigan Transportation Safety Institute say inclement weather also leads to general reductions in speed.

- An acupuncture patient in Germany was left stuck full of needles in a clinic after the doctor forgot about her, locked up his practice and went home. After waiting for 90 minutes for the doctor to come back the woman called police, who brought the doctor back to finish the job.

- A national park in Tennessee has found it necessary to issue a special reminder not to get near the bears after some genius tried to get up close to bear cubs and the cubs’ mother lunged at him.

- A German who tried to fix his leaky air mattress blew up his apartment instead. The 45-year-old man used tire repair solvent to plug a hole in his mattress and left it overnight. But it blew up when he went to inflate it the next day. A spark from the electric air pump ignited it. The blast caused extensive damage to walls, windows and furniture.

- Cellphones and Driving Don’t Mix. Talking on the phone while driving is dangerous: It’s a no-brainer, right? The brains of science agree. Thanks to one study, we also know it’s worse if you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic. Cellphone-equipped drivers react 18 percent slower when there are brake lights up ahead.

- Employees Hate Meetings. Science solved the riddle of just what “too many meetings” means. Somebody in upper management typically squanders 23 hours a week in meetings. Managers in the middle often spend 12 hours a week wasting away in meetings. And the minions? Still about 6 hours. And those numbers just keep climbing. Unfortunately, as research proves, a painstaking meeting schedule has the worst effect on the employees who are the most motivated and productive. They start to feel stressed and bogged down.

Social Media Fun:Beards may be totally "in," but they are also dirty, and hazardous to human health. Scientists discovered men with beards have more germs in their hairs than dogs carry in their fur. A new study found that every sample of beard hair collected was crawling with bacteria. Nearly half had bugs and bacteria considered hazardous to human health, the Daily Mail reports. The dogs tested had lower levels of microbes, a bacterium that causes disease.
