In The News:
- On this day in 1827: The first swimming school in the U.S. opened in Boston. Its pupils included John Quincy Adams and James Audubon.
- 1904: Some people say the ice cream cone was invented today by Charles E. Menches during the World’s Fair/Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis.
- On this day in 1982: Diet Coke was introduced.
- People love their pets, but how far would you go to save a goldfish? Veterinarians at North Carolina State University are delivering life-saving treatment, including cancer treatment and even surgery, to some finned pets. Dr. Greg Lewbart said he doesn’t think twice about doing surgery on goldfish and koi because their owners consider them a part of the family and he wants to do his best to help them. Lewbart said N.C. State handles about 50 fish cases a year, from CAT scans to chemo to operations. HE says owners have spent up to $2,000 on a pet goldfish.
- A woman was arrested at an Indiana hospital after she left her toddler in a hot car. Someone reported the incident and police found a boy sitting in the hot car watching a movie on a cellphone. Police noted that it was 86 degrees outside, all of the vehicle’s windows were closed and the child was extremely wet from sweating. The vehicle’s doors were unlocked and the responding officer brought the boy inside…. The mother was interviewing for a job with the Department of Child Services.
- It turns out that dogs are more like our children than we realize. Two studies have found that man’s best friend possesses a two-year-old child’s capacity to understand human pointing gestures, as well as being able to figure out the meaning of other “human visual signals, including head-turning and gazing.” The baby talk that pet owners often use when speaking to the family pooch allows the animals to be “socially stimulated” — just like kids.
- Men’s Health asked one of its medical experts if we humans benefit from hitting “snooze” to get an extra ten minutes of sleep in the morning. The answer: probably not.
Fun Fact:Do this every morning and you’ll burn 30 calories. (Make your bed) #funfact
