- On this day in 1962: The first Walmart store opened for business in Rogers, Arkansas.

- Reading children bedtime stories may not be as effective in helping them to learn language as talking to them before they go to sleep. Research shows engaging children in basic conversation could be up to six times more effective than reading to them. Health experts in the U.S. say even if the baby or toddler cannot form words, their primitive responses to a conversation helps develop their language skills.

- A Norwegian family’s swimming pool wasn’t just bolted down, it was in the ground. But that didn’t stop thieves. When the family visited their mountain cabin they discovered a big hole in the yard in place of the swimming pool that had been installed 20 years ago. Their pool, 16 feet in diameter, was uprooted and stolen.
