- on this day in 1983: The last hand-cranked telephone system in the U.S. went out of service as 440 telephone customers in Bryant Pond, Maine, were switched over to direct-dial service.
- A 3-year-old in Ohio is home safe with his family after going missing, thanks to the quick work of K-9 who sniffed the boy out in under 10 minutes. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a call Tuesday about a child who had disappeared from a home and a deputy his K-9, Bandit, set out to search for the missing boy. Just 10 minutes later Bandit had picked up the boy’s scent. He was found about a quarter of a mile away from his home.
- If you’re on a diet, watch out: autumn is the most likely time to fall off your diet. According to a study (Georgia State University) people eat 11 percent more food in autumn than in winter, 14 percent more than in the spring, and 12 percent more than in the summer.
- America, you suck at using the turn signal. In a study (by the Society of Automotive Engineers) we’ve learned that 25% of U.S. drivers “improperly use their turn signals” while out on the road. In the same study nearly half of all drivers don’t use their signal to switch lanes.
- A father in central China was refused permission to name his son ‘@’ (at-sign).

Bonus News (not mentioned on-air):When Billy Bob Hall reported at the Parker County, Texas, Jail to surrender, he told deputies he had to “drink to build up the courage to turn himself in.” That took seven cans of beer, he said, and that’s why he was drunk. But Hall was not summoned to turn himself in, and jailers couldn’t find any sort of warrant for his arrest. He was still arrested for public intoxication.
