In The News:
- On this day in 1950: The comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Schulz was first published.
- Name Your Car Day. Kale Day
- Katmai National Park in Alaska begins Fat Bear Week today (October 2) with their annual competition to crown the fattest bear. Bears emerge from their dens in the spring fairly skinny, and then spend all summer packing on the pounds to keep them going through the winter. Voting on individual bears will run today through Tuesday (October 8) on Facebook… Katmai’s bears, home to one of the densest concentration of bears on Earth, appeared on the explore.org webcams in June as relatively skinny, sometimes gaunt looking, animals. But by September, the brown bears put on hundreds of pounds — some with bellies that nearly scrape the ground.
- UPS announced Tuesday that it has received government approval to operate a “drone airline.” Don’t expect your next package to arrive directly on your doorstep by a drone, though: UPS says it will first use this certification to build a drone delivery network for hospital campuses around the US… UPS says the certification will let the company fly as many drones as it wants, let its drones fly beyond a pilot’s visual line of sight, carry cargo that weighs more than 55 pounds, and fly at night.
- Coffee could become ‘luxury item’ very soon … Experts think that in about 30 years — by 2050 — up to half the land currently used globally to grow coffee could become unusable for this purpose. The experts says the quality of coffee could be diminished as farmers turn to new varieties, and that lower production volumes could cause prices to increase.
- If you thought fish were cold, wet creatures who forget everything in three seconds flat, think again. Scientists found they are fast learners, carry mental maps around in their heads, and can retain memories for months. Tests on fish in an aquarium (at Oxford University) showed that despite their tiny brains, they possess cognitive abilities outstripping those of some small mammals.
- How do people see you at work? Most of us think we know ourselves and know how we come across to other people. Well, that’s not exactly the case. A study (Columbia Business School) discovered 57 percent of participants viewed themselves as over-assertive, while their peers thought they were actually under-assertive. 56 percent who viewed themselves as under-assertive were actually seen as over-assertive by their peers.
- Doctors in Kyrgyzstan (keer-giz-stan) Asia removed a nine-pound hairball from the stomach of an teen after she could no longer eat or drink. The ball developed over the years as she chewed the ends of her hair and ate hair off the floor.
