- on this day in 1969: The first connection was made on what would become the internet. The first two computers linked were at UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute — part of a Defense Department program called ARPANET. Within a year, 10 sites were connected.
- An Arizona man who spent three years building a pyramid from 1,030,315 pennies demolished the structure and cashed in the pennies at his credit union. Cory Nielsen, known on YouTube as the Penny Building Fool, finished his penny pyramid in the spring and had the structure examined by a Guinness World Records official to verify it beat the old record of just over 1 million pennies (set in Lithuania)… Nielsen demolished the pyramid after the record was verified and Monday he loaded 6,000 pounds of coins into a pair of cargo vans. The pyramid netted Nielsen $10,303.15.
- Tired of cracked phone screens? US Navy scientists have developed a see-through armor made from spinel, a mineral made from magnesium aluminate that occurs naturally. Researchers say it is tougher and lighter than current bulletproof glass. It could be used to protect military vehicles, but could find uses on spacecraft, satellites, cameras and even on smartphones and watches.
- A Texas highway was closed for several hours Tuesday after a semi-truck crashed and spilled 40,000 pounds of avocados… A local police department (Cibolo PD) tweeted about the accident and added the hashtags #hearthealthy #whynotdonuts.
- According to a survey of U.S. workers:• 34% of people think employees who show up to work hacking should be sent home by the boss.
• 3% go so far as to say coughing co-workers should be isolated in a special sick room.
• 37% steer clear of colleagues who come to work ill.
• 2% give the sick person the “evil eye.”
